These are very clever but pricey at $6 each. They look very solid. They look like a modded hose clamp and they do look like they'll hold a water bottle cage securely. I would trust these under the down tube or on the seat tube.

That's too bad because I like VO cages and I'm running one on my Fuji with an old school clamp. It is working but it was a pain to get on and the clamps are not holding as well as they might.

It is strange that VO sells cages that don't work with the VO bottle cage straps. Almost nonsensical. Perhaps they used to sell a compatible cage. Can't recall. If that's the combo you're using no wonder it's not working great. The traditional metal straps are actually quite secure if used with a vintage or vintage style bottle cage that has rectangular tab extensions that the straps are meant to go over. See vintage TA bottle cages, or REG or Cobra. A bit later in the 80s the same standard was adopted by early Specialized, Blackburn, 'Avenir', etc etc.
Anyhow, other than vintage cages, the only cages sold today that will still work with straps are the OG Blackburn 'Comp' and the Zefal vintage reissue. For all others you'll need your choice of doodad.

Here's RJ the bike guy using hose clamps; that's a lot cheaper than the King ones and I think it looks fine on a vintage bike in a steampunk kind of way. Sorry @nomadmax and @Salamandrine,

Two Fish makes an excellent strap on bottle cage holder that works very well.
I've used one for years on various bikes with only one set of cage mounts.

I found on a few of my bikes; the water bottle mountings for either the Bars or Stem work well
.In the early tours of the 40's 50's you can see these types of holders on the bikes, Even Double ones !!
Surprising how easy it is to take a drink.
Also NO scratching the painted surfaces of the frame tubes..

Pursuant to my earlier post about using Rivnuts. Here's an image of a Shimano Aero water bottle and cage put on a 1980s vintage Bianchi by using Rivnuts. You can see how clean a look the Rivnuts give when installed.

Grady- Yes, that's the one I have been using for a few years now. I haven't experienced any problem with it moving around and hitting my leg like Prowler, but can see how that might happen depending on seat tube diameter, paint finish, type of wax used, etc.
I think for a bouncy kind of application I would be tempted to used his strip-O-inner tube method to ensure less movement.

This has been a good thread with a lot of ideas for adding a 2d water bottle cage to an old bike. Another possibility to keep in mind is the zefal magnum one liter bottle. It holds 33 ounces which is significantly more than a "standard" water bottle which tend to come in at around 24 ounces capacity. There are some online complaints about leaking but the new ones, in my experience, do not. The only downside is that they are tall and they can be difficult to refill in some sinks.
