Ok so the story is that i was out on the weekend looking at some stuff and i came across this Gios Torino Super Record in size 48, I do not have a picture of the bike cause i was cleaning it today, i will take some pictures tomorrow.

Anyways there were a few people there looking at the bike, bidding started at 300, and well it got a little out hand and i ended up buying this bike for a good chunk of change, i new it was worth something and i had someone lined up that would buy the bike. Anyways the bike was in incredible shape, probably only 2 chips on the frame in the paint, everything else is immaculate. It has a Cinelli stem and bars with Gios torino handwritten on it, Super Record downtube shifters, derailleurs, levers and brakes. Super record seat post the GT engraved in red on the seat post. Edco competition crank. It is a very nice bike but small.

So the main question about this is, why is this bike worth so much, is Gios Torino up there with the eddy mercx, colnago's, masi's pinarellos and such? I've been on this forum for the last little while and i've read alot in the forums, but no one seems to mention anything about Gios Torino.

I will try to take pictures of the fork tomorrow it looks awesome, instead of a pentographed name or tag in the lug, they have installed an awesome Gios Torino Medallion, it's pretty cool anyways any help would be great!

I wish it was a 58 or a 59, i woulda probably added it to the stable cause it's so nice.

it is a Gios Torino Super Record, it doesn't have those pentographed cranks though. i'm sure that could be bought somehow.

Doesn't matter. The auction had two bidders willing to stake it out at the heat of the moment.

I'd take a Gios before I'd take a run-of-the-mill Colnago or Pinarello.

i see i still have yet a lot to learn about these bikes, i know a fair bit about these bikes for someone my age, a lot of these vintage bikes were made before i was born haha, but it seems i still have A LOT to learn, i'm just a little grasshopper amonst you veterans.

but like i said kurt, if this was 58 cm, i'd definately consider keeping it.

Well i usually try to go into an auction with a set price and i don't go over it, it just turned out that the set price i had beat out everyone elses.

Then again it depends how you look at it, some vintage bikes could be like antiques, you can't get that stuff now, it's rare, so who knows what the real price is.

I don't know what the significance behind this brand/bike is but i knew it was worth money, hopefully someone can explain the history or why it's so high priced

-racing pedigree, some of the most famous riders/squads rode GIOS in the 80's
-beautiful details, lot's of panto
-interesting history with family feuds, rival shops
-recognisable colour
-(Maybe Holland only) Almost the mandatory bike to have for collectors, most serious guys have one or two in the stable.

Maybe not so many victories, but Brooklyn and IJsboerke were very popular teams here in the Low Countries. Maybe it's a regional thing, but GIOS has a very active owners club here, and the frames/bikes sell for a lot on maarktplaats (CL equivalent).

Because more than one person at the auction really wanted it. Final value is always defined by the buyer. But there are many other things to consider when attempting to determine Vintage Bicycle Value and some of them have nothing to do with the bicycle, or even the person buying it, believe it or not.

Finally, like it or not, vintage bicycles are becoming popular! Old people like them for reasons of nostalgia and ride quality. Young people like them for the cool factor. And lots of people buy them knowing they will increase in value or even offer a decent profit if sold right away. All of this demand drives prices up.

Next year the OP and me and you will be paying even more than this year. Just an old man's opinion.

I am with you. I take a Gios all day long before I look at a Colnago. No Pinarellos, thanks. they are not as lazy as the traditional Italian bike of the same time period. I am bias, because I raced a Gios Torino in 1985, or was it 86, and crashed it through the window when the car got on the race course with three other guys. They don't care about us Jr. USCF riders. That is a beautiful bike. when you own a Gios, you never have to tell someone what color is. It already understood. I don't understand the red ones later in the late 80s or early 90s.

I vote more important. I rather see Flanders over and over 300 times then one tour. Roubaix is second then the other classics. Especially the coverage we get here in the states.

I'd never really a Gios was all that special until I watched Stars and Watercarriers. I also thought those Brooklyn cycling caps were about Brooklyn, NY and were a fashion thing...

And yes, lets see some pics. I have never seen one in Toronto.
