Gravel riding in Arcata/Eureka area?
I'm bored! Not many roads around here, and less traffic means the cagers go faster. I've looked at Google maps many times, and there's very little that isn't on Green Diamond property; the only interesting "road" I've seen is Hammond Truck Rd. in Crannell, east of Clam Beach. Is that a thing? Is there something I'm missing? Any suggestions will be gratefully accepted.

I can't find it now, but I read one account online from someone who attempted Hammond Truck Trail and found it wasn't a real road even though it shows up on Google maps.
And I'm surprised to hear you're running out of gravel in that area! It seems like a little to the east you've got an endless supply: Kneeland, Showers Pass, Bald Mountain, Old Highway 299, Bair...

It's been a long time since I went to HSU, but there were tons of trails, both good maintained ones, and some not so well maintained, behind campus. I took a MTB class while attending HSU and we rode pretty much a different trail every time. Down next to the power lines and stuff was fairly well maintained too. I don't know if this is more MTB than gravel, but most of the trails are for hiking and were well marked and wide. Should be perfect gravel type trails. I can't imagine they are gone as that was one of the main attractions for HSU students and visitors.

Thanks, shotwellian . I was looking for rides I could do from home. We have the one SUV on the planet that can't take a hitch, and it's starting to fall apart anyway. It had never occurred to me to google it. Supposedly it's a trail.
Hi, HIPCHIP. The trails behind campus are part of the Arcata Community Forest, and I've been a Volunteer Trail Steward there for six(!) years. Sadly, we haven't been out there since March, when we worked on repairing damage done by the loggers at the top of trail 12. I was looking more for fire road-type rides. Thinking they don't exist.

You'll notice though that the trails.com page doesn't have any actual discussion or reports by users...it's just an automated page created for anything it finds with the word "trail" in it.

Yea, I think that's just an automatically generated thing. The Harry Merlo Rec Area seems to be the area around Big Lagoon. Anyway, I'd be very happy if it turns out I'm wrong about Hammond Truck Trail. If you go and find a real trail, let us know!

I'm dusting off my old thread; I finally made it out to Hammond Truck Rd.! There's good news and bad news. The good news is that's it's a real road, and looks like a dream to ride. The bad news is that it's an active logging road, and I was politely chased off. Sigh.
Here's where it starts; Crannell Rd. on theleft right, Hammond Truck Rd. on the right left.
EDIT: Well that's what happens when you don't prepare; I rode up Crannell Rd. Still, Hammond Truck Rd. looks pretty similar.

There's not much gravel to speak of in my rural area either, other than access roads and stuff like that which are private property. However, this being California, our regular state-maintained roads have gotten so bad, that you could legitimately call many of them "gravel roads". I hear that the Slauson Cutoff is now, how you say ... Strade Bianche. (just kidding)
