How does this bad boy all decked out in modern componentry ride compared to something like a modern CAAD? From what I understand, newer cannondales ride very very well and these older 'Dales are harsh, which is obviously difficult to compare because of differences in componentry. It seems like you can make a pretty good comparison here.

If you use the older Campy 8Brifter/RD the spacing is exactly 5.00, exactly matching the Shimano 7speed. It shouldn't have any issues, as I have used this combination several times. Ad a cog in next to the smallest and you end up with 8 Shimano cogs, no spacer between cassette and hub needed.
Would you please expand on this a bit?
Are you talking about adding a cog to a 7spd freewheel or 7spd freehub?
I've acquired a mid '80's Basso Loto and I'd like to update the shifting, but also keep the 126mm spacing.
Thanks, and Cheers

I hope you're talking about putting a 7-sp Shimano cassette on an 8-sp freehub, then adding a smaller cog.
Otherwise, I'm confused. Heck, I think I'm confused in the first place.

Jack of all trades
I have in the past just used the 7-speed cassette, with a specially manufactured spacer in between the cassette and the hub. Got it off of EBay. HTH...

Bikes like this make me stick around on the forums all day. What a beautiful machine, and the kit is a nice touch. Very nice picture, too. Perfect! Was the frame NOS when you started with it?

Thanks! The frame was far from NOS.. Needed some touch-up paint and lots of waxing and polishing to make it look like it is now. The decals are all original. There are more pics on Flickr...
It's a 1990 frame with 130mm rear spacing from the factory, so 11-speed was not a problem.

thanks for the kind words fellers, appreciate it.
As for the ride, ive never ridden a modern cannondale so cant say, but compared to my 2011 BMC SLR01 team machine (which people say is harsh), i find stiffness wise, or harshness is rather similar funnily. Mind you im no pro, so my opinions would probably mean nothing to you!
Rolls didnt suit my backend, neither did a regal i had, so went with my tried and tested arione, most people are taken back when they realise its nearly a 25 year old frame!

That Cannondale looks awesome, man! But, I've always been turned off by the juxtaposition of those large diameter top and down tubes with that fork. It would look even meaner with a black carbon fork and the rims stickers removed. Flat black is my favorite color.

Thats a great idea either way, because unlike a lot of narrow steel tubed frames in this thread that frame is perfect for a carbon fork. He'd probably have to find a 1" steerered carbon fork. You can find them on eBay. You'd probably save almost two pounds with a all carbon fork and straight to threadless headset. You'd also have to install a new threadless headset.

Nice work on the Cannondale.
Agreed on all points, especially the matte black. There is some guy I keep seeing around town in a matte black Audi A7...almost makes me want to get my MBA. Almost.

1984 Basso Gap
Apologies I haven't yet figured out how to insert a larger picture without exceeding size.
Currently built with Shimano 6750 and with FSA stem&bar. Patiently looking for a pantographed Basso stem, then will retrofit vintage 3T bars of similar color. My other road bike is Shimano 6650 (dark gray&silver) and more traditional styling than the 6750 crankset space age look. I am kind of growing used to the blueish-gray color but may swap the build kits between bikes. I was too impatient to do so at the time.

Oh. My. That is awesome. I'm not gonna lie at first glance I thought it was a 2013 CAAD10. Please don't de-sticker the wheels. But I will have to agree that a carbon fork would look awesome and take out some of the jitter. Do they even make carbon forks that would fit these older frames?

1" threaded carbon forks might be out there, but I would definitely go threadless.

Mr. Vader, Your bike has arrived.
Good looking 3.0. I had a 89 R600 and it was a brutal ride and I always attributed it to that aluminum fork. It transmitted everythign directly to the base of your shoulders.
When I built my R300 frame I went with a cheap carbon from from Performance.....WOW! its one of my best riding bikes. Go carbon, you wont regret it.
