Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pumpkin-spice mac and cheese?

The girl is too young to articulate her distaste, but the boy said that the cheese sauce was too thick and that there was too much of it. I'll halve the butter/flour next time and be more careful with the pasta/sauce ratio. I'll also play with different cheeses for my own amusement.

There's something about Kraft mac and cheese - they've found the right chemicals to make the kids' synapses fire.

It seems that restaurants use very high heat and a short bake time just to brown the top of the serving. Long baking seems like a good idea, but it doesn’t work so well.
Yeah, stove-top all the way for me - the kids have never liked baked mac and any crumb topping must be thoroughly removed by an asbestos abatement squad before they'll touch it.

Compared to you, I’m downright stocky. I do make an effort to get to the gym and maintain a little upper body strength and bulk, but wife is not impressed.

I find that one of the most flavorful mellow cheddars for mac and cheese is a variety called rat trap. It’s not sharp but still full of flavor. And it melts wonderfully. I like a little dry mustard and cayenne in the bechamel.

My mom used Velveeta. Have you tried that one yet?

We did the annual health insurance marathon today. It's up to US$500+ apiece now. We then had some lunch and then bought three rolls of single strand electrical wire (Romex is completely unknown here), did a couple other things and returned home. Tomorrow around mid day, we plan to actually leave for Chetumal, at the extreme southern part of Quintana Roo, to spend the night. One of our favorite cities in any part of the world. Very Caribbean and still Mexican. Following breakfast on Wed., we will drive across the border into Belize, barring an act of god.
The electrician will do some work in our absence. A good friend will take care of the animals and keep the plants alive. For the Mrs. it's a work trip. For me, if I can remain unbored all will be well. I might be able to score a beach cruiser on occasion.

Took a break from desk work after lunch to install a hitch receiver on the Jeep. It's a simple installation, two bolts off four bolts on, done.

I temporarily forgot that I was going to be working on a 15 year old vehicle that has spent most of it's life in the rust belt. I remembered this fact when I snapped the head of one of the bolts.

I still have two bolts to loosen on the hitch on ye olde minivan.

I'm glad I hadn't gotten around to that, since if I had I would likely have sold the old van.

But today I was putting on new hub and one of the bolts was tough to remove, threads totally destroyed upon post removal inspection. Glad I had a parts car. Not glad I had to jack it up, take off a wheel and a caliper to get to that old bolt.

A parts car is a great thing to have. I had a parts Nissan pickup==my second to last in a series of them dating back to '74. I and many of my friends used the parts off of that truck. The last in that series met its end in Belize-- an '88 4wd

A parts car would be frowned upon in my neighborhood.

I got a parking ticket on Saturday. Rolled the dice and did not feed the meter. First one in a gozillion years. Just looked at the details. It was written by someone named "Hanratty." Imagine growing up with that name.

I still wash it and keep air in the tires. It runs and drives but transmission slips REAL bad. Now that I've removed that bolt I wouldn't take it over 10 mph, though.

Once I did get a letter from the city after I left the front up on jack stands for a couple of days.

Ever read Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro? It's about a group of children growing up as orphans in a strange and dismal boarding school and it becomes gradually apparent that they're clones being raised to donate organs in a series of harvesting surgeries leading to an early death... Saddest damn book I ever read, but what writing! I'm crying for your car right now.

I got a speeding ticket last week. I was test driving the track car (throttle is sticking a little bit) and I guess I was going a bit faster than I should. Now I owe $150.

In Philly you can get a ticket for having a flat tire for too long. Eventually, you car may be considered abandoned and towed.

I did another flat Delaware ride, this one along the coastal highway to the Maryland border and back.

Good news: It was a fun ride for me.

Bad news: I went with a local cyclist who I met yesterday, and about 1 hour into the ride we picked up a third random rider, and after a climb (aka bridge) he was behind me and between my rear wheel and other rider, and for unknown reasons bumped my rear wheel and went down. He only had some minor road rash but his front wheel had 2 broken spokes and was too far out of true to ride so he had to call AAA. I checked back on him and he got home ok but I still feel bad.

Other minor bad news, Strava ended my ride at the turnaround point, and I can tell from my "angi" app that my average speed was 2MPH faster on the way back. Sad.

I once had a project car that I had no business owning (but I was in my 20s and did a lot of dumb things) and I remember getting very indignant when a neighbor called the city because it was parked too long in one spot on the street. I had to move it every 48 hours to avoid getting it towed, as I recall.

Now that I am pushing 40 and own a house I have a few neighbors who have way too many cars for one house and park on the streets and clog up our quiet residential neighborhood, I totally get it.

It looks trashy and it inconveniences everyone else and the city and the taxpayers should not be subsidizing their parking and in addition to getting a ticket I think it should be punishable by guillotine.

(Possibly related -- everyone in the neighborhood has some issues with these particular neighbors just generally being crappy, inconsiderate, trashy neighbors.)

In other news, get off my lawn.

He half wheeled you, don't feel too bad.

No parts cars allowed at the condos where I live.
