While it was manufactured in 1985, it is a 1986 model.

Very nice example of a 1984 Westwood in the Metallic Cinnamon finish and with the relatively rare SunTour Le Tech rear derailleur. The missing pedals were SunTour XC-II. Despite the appearance, the saddle does appear to have been exchanged for something cheaper, as OEM spec was an Avocet Touring.

Thank-you. This would appear to be a 1984 model year, as the 1983 literature shows and specs this model in solid burgundy (i.e. no silver head tube). This can be confirmed from the tubing decal as the 1983 version was Tange #5 plain gauge CrMo , while the 1984 version was an unspecified Tange double butted CrMo. Both used hi-tensile stays and fork. Component specs for both years were similar : SunTour AR derailleurs Sugino crankset (RT in 1983, GT in 1984), Dia-Compe 500 series brakes (N version in 1983, Q version in 1984), Sanshin hubs (QR front, nutted rear) laced to 27" Araya 16A rims.

Correct, I have the XC2 pedals as well. And yes, the saddle is not original. Apparently this was purchased and stored in a bedroom, unridden.

Hello everyone. I have a Nishiki custom sport serial # S1 4B383, I would love to have some info on. I received it as a gift and wondered if it was worth fixing up or keeping as original as possible. I’m too new to post pics yet apparently but it’s in pretty good shape. The tires are 27 1/4. Brakes are Dia-compe. Shimano 600 derailleur. It seems fairly old and I always hesitate to alter anything that’s vintage. Thanks.

Nishiki Forest

I was wondering if anyone has any info on my early 90’s Nishiki Forest mountain bike. I bought it new when I was in the military while I was stationed in South Korea. Serial number is GJO 1270. Is it a Giant frame? Worth holding on to?

Hey,

I have this newly acquired Giant Perigee with serial number GB217503...

**My pictures got corrupted... See this post.**

Based on the system I quoted below (which appears to be the closest fit) the 3rd digit being '2' indicates that it is maybe a 1992... Just want to confirm that this is the correct system for Giant branded frames, not just Nishikis.

y =last digit of calendar year of manufacture (i.e. 7 = 1987, 8 = 1988, etc.)
xxxxx = numbers probably indicating a sequential manufacturing number during the fortnight

Example: GD706959 was the 6,959th frame manufactured during the 4th fortnight of 1987.

* The serial number format appears to started in 1987 and is known to extend beyond 1989 on Giant branded models, though no Nishiki examples have been reported, to date.
Thanks!

Yes, Giant used the same serial number format for both their eponymous branded and contract manufactured frames. The serial number, in conjunction with the Shimano 300EX indcates a 1992 model. FYI, the main triangle is CrMo with CrMO forks but the stays are hi-tensile steel. The missing wheelset employed Shimano 300EX hubs laced to 700C Araya SP30 rims and the rear cogs were 13-26T. FYI, the MSRP was $445 CDN.

Thxs for the submission. Too bad about the bent tubes. FYI, the official colour designation is Lake Blue.

Great, thanks for this info! Do you know how many speeds it would have been?

1992 Shimano 300EX utilized a 7 speed Hyperglide cassette and freehub.

Your frame was manufactured by Giant of Taiwan, during weeks 37-38 of 1988. This the grey period where it could be a 1988 or 1989 model. However, in this case, we know it's a 1988 model as the 1989 version utilized cantilever rear brakes, straight bladed forks and a revised down tube logo which incorporated a "Cunningham Design" designation. Thxs for the contribution.

Mary, did you ever figure out what the W represents?

I have posted about this numerous times in the past. It is the logo for West Coast Cycle (Supply), the owner and distributor of the Nishiki brand in the USA. It is actually a "backwards C" + "W" + "C" compressed into one symmetrical character. As such, it is a stylized version of WCC (West Coast Cycle).

What you have should be a 1987 model manufactured in late 1986. The 1986 version was black with a yellow head tube, forks and seat tube. The 1987 version was black with a yellow head tube and stays. A 1987 version can be corroborated by the presence of a down tube logo that incorporates a horizontal bar with a "Triathlon Series" designation. Thank-you for the contribution.
