Something to say about heavy wheels...NWD!
Recently I popped a rear spoke, 28 spoke rear wheel. I took it as an opportunity to see what was out there and read posts on here. Someone suggested Vuelta Coursa HD 36 spoke rims. I researched them and liked what I read.
Heavy rims and Gatorskins.....you would think that's the formula for slow rides but nope.
Hand made, 36 spoke count and look cool to boot. Sure, they're not 1500g, they're over 2,000. Took them for a 20 mile ride today. The cool factor was that they act like a flywheel on a car. Slower to get to speed but once there they want to keep rolling instead of slowing. Seems every time I looked at my computer I was going 2 or more mph faster than normal for the same route with no more perceived effort.
Don't be afraid to try new things, I'm pretty dang happy so far!

Oh yeah, those wheels are legit for a Clyde. I have a set of those on my daily road bike rider. They are excellent. I tune them every winter in the off season and they never need touching the rest of the year. I have been pleased with my set too! For the price they are a super deal!

Pfft... whatever. I know a guy that coulda built you a wheelset outta ultralight rims with only 16 spokes each that “should be plenty strong enough.”
Be sure to save the old, flimsy wheelset. You never know when you might want one to wrap around the neck of the next clown who tries to convince you how much weight you coulda saved if you went with something lighter and more aero. Because, you know, “they should be more than you’ll ever need.”
Good job.

Vuelta aero wheelsets
Several years ago I bought a cheap Vuelta MTB 26" wheelset. Very deep V rims with 24 aero(flattened) 3mm spokes on each wheel. I expected the wheelset to last for a little while then die the broken spoke death. To my surprise the wheelset proved to be 2mph faster at all times than my old 36 hole 2mm round spoke wheels and just as durable. I ended up loving that wheelset and rode it up till I sold the bicycle. I found out that a very deep heavier V rim with extra big spokes was extremely durable and fast. I never broke a spoke, in several years of riding, but had to tighten the rear wheel a couple of times before it settled into the work. So Vuelta built an aero wheelset that carried this Clyde around with a big smile the whole time I owned them. Good luck with your new Vuelta's.

Started @ 244 lbs... still over 200 a year later when I tried a 15 year old move at the age of 53.... To avoid a speed bump, tried to hop the bike ("done it a million times") into the gutter and back onto the asphalt.... It was a cold December morning, pre-dawn, after a night of rain and wind... wet leaves in the gutter.... Into the gutter was easy, but the tires slipped trying to get out and I panic clamped the brakes! At one point the rear tire and my arse were poised in time above the front tire and my head. Slowest crash to the ground I ever experienced, with time to tuck and land on my right upper arm (read, later, that I shouldn't do that). That morning my wife had suggested wearing my bomber jacket against the cold weather. She probably saved me from permanent injury
Within the summer, the rims had had it! A mechanic told me that bontrager rims on that bike were not made for 200 lb gorillas (my characterization) to jump curbs with.
Replaced that summer with Sunrims Rhino Lites... still riding them today and super satisfied. A reviewer characterized them as "bomb proof". Surely seem to be

@mynewnchome where did you buy them from? I see Nashbar/performance says they wont sell them anymore. I got mine from Nashabar back when it was still a good place for $125. Now the only place they are sold online that I could find is from the factory at $220. Still a good deal just curious where you got them.

Yea, bit the bullet, straight from Vuelta. But still not a bad deal after I shopped wheels.

@mynewnchome, what year and model is that Cannondale? I'm building up a 2006 CAAD 8 that was originally an R1000. As I am losing weight, I am building this as a reward for more than 120 pounds lost so far...

i have the same set of wheels and tires on my 2010 roubaix and have no problems with them. they are reasonably priced also. i think i paid like $110 for a set for them.
i replaced my Vuelta corsica pro with them. i didn't have a problem with the corsicas, but i hit a decent size rut with them a tweaked the rim and it had to be trued. no such problems with the HD ones.

I went with Zipp 808 rear and 404 front, I believe they are rated for 265 pounds, and once you're in shape, they're still the wheels you'll likely want!
