The three most common bikes at this year's Gran Fondo New York include usual suspects, but after that there are some real surprises. Because of all the foreigners, some brands were more well-represented than they are on any other weekend in the NYC area. For example, Canyon came in at 7th most common/popular. What got me, though, was Stevens; never even heard of them, but they were more common than Bianchi, Focus and Ridley COMBINED. They counted 93% of the bikes that officially started, so the rankings/proportions are reasonably reliable.

Considering Canyon is 7th and it's not even sold in the states, I'd say these figures have little value in terms of representing the average brand sales.

This post makes me sad. I watch GCN, Bike Radar, even Durian Rider. There are so many makes out there I can't touch in the States.

LBS 1 - Specialized, Cervelo, Bianchi, Intense, Focus (bonus, I want to check these out, so many rave reviews on their entry level packages).

LBS 2- Trek, Giant

LBS in my old neighborhood - Noticed it right when I got into cycling. I walked my used CL bike over there to have it fixed. Researched it later and it turns out they are one of the best bike shops in So Cal. They aren't a Specialized or Trek house. For fast inventory they have the usual Cannondales and Giants. But they have BMC's and few brands I haven't seen yet in a store. Fantastic stuff to check out.

Bottom line. In the States, you can almost bump into a Specialized or Trek shop on accident, or find yourself in the Cannondale or Giant outlet. But anything else you need to spend some time to look for. Others you can't get unless you want to import yourself.

The only bicycle brand I have on that list is Giant ... I have a Giant OCR3 on my trainer.

All the rest of my bicycles don't make the list, or are in the "Other" category.



Just an aside and incidentally ... apropos of nothing ... the first thing I think of when I see the word, "foreigners" is "US Americans".

Motobecane, Cipollini, Pegoretti and my Casati are all in the "other" category. I didn't see any other Casati, but I did see one or two of each of the others.


No, it's not a random sample of bikes sold in the US at all. Nearly 60% of the participants were visitors from foreign countries; and it was a more "serious" group of riders than average.


I suspect part of the reason is, again, the high proportion of participants NOT being from the US, where it is generally well represented. At local races, I'd say it's in the top 10 most common brands, and I imagine that at time trial and similar events, it's better represented.

And you have "lots" of bikes!

The number of Wilier surprised me, but I almost expected more DeRosa - they are a sponsor, and there's a contingent of "brand ambassadors" on Protos with Super Record; if it weren't for them, DeRosa would have been down a couple of spots at least.

Thanks for sharing. I'm surprised to see Cervelo and Pinarello ahead of Giant, but as you say, there was a large international presence.
