I attacked and worked a lot in an effort to burn every match in my book in my race today. Considering the field was mostly 1's and 2's and a few domestic pro's (one of which is racing the tour of california), it was probably not a smart move.

But, I had tons of fun.

3 hours of pain at tempo and above. It was actually 3:07 in which time I did 57 miles and 4225ft of climbing. I went out a bit to hard in the first hour and paid dearly the next 2 hours.

I did an hour at recovery pace on Friday. Felt alright. Got an eye lid infection and doc says no strenuous exercise for a while. On antibiotics, both topical & oral. The ol' eye is festering up pretty good right now. Doc said easy exercise is ok. Took today off and will try to do a 45 min Z2 recover effort tomorrow making sure my HR doesn't leave that zone.

I hadn't been sick for ever it seems. But I have been off since just after Christmas. This sucks. I hope this is the last thing and I can get back at it in a few more days. I'm almost 3 weeks behind of where I intended. Probably more considering the fitness I've lost.

Did the "hard" group ride today but mostly just sat in and didn't work too hard... compared to last saturday where I attacked constantly on the "easier" ride. Funny how that works. I wanted an easier ride to cap off the week of relatively high intensity so I did the harder ride because sitting in on the easier ride is just too boring and I end up going even harder Bike racing is funny.

First day back on the bike since my confirmed ACL tear to the left knee. Knee still swollen but it handled today's effort well. No significant pain at this point. But I think I'll keep the wattage where it is until I see the Doc on the 23rd.

Regardless, I'm pumped that I can do some light Spinning.

Entire workout (147 watts):
Duration: 49:00
Work: 431 kJ
TSS: 26.4 (intensity factor 0.568)
Norm Power: 159
VI: 1.08
Pw:HR: 1.53%
Pa:HR: 7.08%
Distance: 17.159 mi
Min Max Avg
Power: 80 208 147 watts
Heart Rate: 99 149 127 bpm
Cadence: 70 86 79 rpm
Speed: 18.8 23 21.0 mph

Good effort Greg!
I had a decent ride today, a couple of hours but the highlight was scouting out a climb which is now my new favourite.

It's called Swiss Hill in Alderley Edge, it's cobbled, gnarly, slippy in places, very steep the whole way and bloody marvellous. Just like in a Belgian Classic It's at the end o a 102 mile sportive I'm doing at the end of march. I'll try and get a picture next time I'm there as there aren't any on Google Images. Average power for the climb was 300 Watts, had to remain firmly seated right at the back of the saddle and pedal really smoothly or much wheel spin was had, it was more like a MTB climb.

The power is coming back after the bronchitis now. Think the max cadence was exaggerating by about 3 or 4 rpm

Entire workout (159 watts):
Duration: 2:05:07 (2:54:45)
Work: 1183 kJ
TSS: 151.2 (intensity factor 0.855)
Norm Power: 205
VI: 1.29
Pw:HR: 9.38%
Pa:HR: 6.3%
Distance: 29.349 mi
Min Max Avg
Power: 0 780 159 watts
Heart Rate: 85 185 148 bpm
Cadence: 27 222 74 rpm

Status; just finished up my first 3 week block yesterday. Today starts my recovery week, went for a run this morning and feel great. Over the last 3 weeks i have improved my FTP and LTP and have lost about 3 pounds. I have to say that I'm right on target w/ my training plan.

No one showed up today for our group ride. I rode alone to a nasty climb and did repeats then did some hard tempo work.

Training Status: Feeling decent.

Made some changes to my setup. Moved to a 120mm stem from a 110 and dropped a 5mm spacer in the process. More rise and I'm a little more stretched out.

Today, did a 20 min SST interval on the trainer at about 90% and felt pretty good doing it. Did the last 2 mins of it at 110% of FTP.

Back starting twinging a little bit, but no pain at all. I think this was a good fit change. It sure feels promising.

That's the first time I've spent time on the trainer since early december without my back absolutely howling at me. I'm so so so excited.

Life Status:

As I left my university for winter break, I bumped a driver in chevy 4x4 that was tapping his brakes at a light. The light turned green and he started to go, but then braked all of a sudden. I got an estimate from him for 1200 bucks. There go my savings.

Called him today, he said he thinking about not doing anything since the crack is tiny, but he figured that he'd let insurance take care of it. Well, I'm a young driver, I'll probably pay twice as much from an increase in rates as I would from just paying out of pocket. Fault is mine, but still. Lesson learned...

Atleast my training status is good!

Bleh...

(end rant)

I was up until 1AM fixing a wheel I broke in a race yesterday (how do you strip a nipple?), so I didn't get much sleep. But I drug my sorry butt outside for some 20' intervals in SST over a 2 hour period of time.

45 minutes of easy. Just in the endurance area. I'm starting 4 days of low volume/recovery. I couldn't go any easier or I'd fall off my rollers.

did the 3/4 early bird/training crit this morning. Was happy to find that hiding in the pack in a 3/4 pancake crit is easy these days. Didn't sprint at the end (training race) but moved up a bit and finished somewhere around 20th of 60-ish.

My hands were number afterwards from 50 miutes in the drops which further confirms my thoughts on my fit not being great, additionally, my saddle still sucks

5x5's today. Did a much better job of pacing these. 350 watts avg for the 5 intervals. Tomorrow is a rest day. My legs are sore and tired. One more week on this phase then a rest week.

That's what I've been trying to do better at - pacing myself. I usually go all out and my last couple are about worthless.

What % of your FTP did you go at?

That ends up about 115%. Last week I hit em way too hard. I did again this week but not as bad as last week. The place Im doing em is on a climb, and in the middle it hits 11% so the power goes up. The challenging part is the last 1:40 where is is 1% to 4% so I have to be able to apply power by spinning when it flattens and not blow when it kicks up. I really thought I couldnt do anymore after the 3rd one, but I forced myself to try, and managed to get em done. It hurt alot, but I assume thats the pay off.

2 hours on the rollers today. In two 1 hr sessions. Total for the week only 9.5 hours, unfortunately. Not sure what happened, other than cold and rain.

My left knee is starting to bother me a little bit. Doesn't hurt when I'm on the bike, but touching the area to the bottom outside is painful. I took some Ibuprofen and I'm icing it right now. Must be a cleat positioning thing I guess, not sure why it's just showing up now.

Finally on my new meds. NO! Not Chlorpromazine. Lisinopril for high blood pressure. Hopefully they won't mess with my training much. If I'm not mistaken, WR hasn't had any detrimental effects on them.

Tomorrow (since they're calling for snow) I'm hitting the trainer for another set of 20s.

I'm also on Lisinopril - great stuff, controls my blood pressure, no apparent side effects. I spent all last spring and summer going hard, had no problems at all. Hope it works out for you, too!

^^

Just watch the hydration while on BP meds. Getting all bonky and dehydrated can make even a normally hypertensive person hypotensive, and while on the pills that can be bad.
