Also, during our team event today, I got word that I may have guys working for me in the races this year to help get my points to upgrade. That, in itself, was a wonderful compliment.

Just back from my race. Got 29th out of 49 today. I'm satisfied with that, considering I didn't feel very strong going in.

My teammate got 2nd. The same one who won last week. Last week he also got top 5 in the 3/4 race and today he got third in the 3/4 race (the break he was in lapped the field). Ridiculous. He shouldn't be a 4, he's more like a strong 3.

He's working hard now to try and get to Cat 3 (I think he's really close, if not there after today) so that he can race Collegiate A with our fast guys and support them.

Almost forgot to update my Cat-o-meter.

Kensuf-

How did you get on?

I'm even more confused. I did a two hour ride outside with 1hr 30 at 'tempo' effort. I inadvertantly set a new FTP by 15 watts. My training is working rather well (big gains as newb) but the problem is I can no way sustain this FTP on the trainer! I struggle to maintain tempo (Lvl3) on the trainer whereas outside Tempo felt like a doddle and FTP felt like tempo. Powertap zeroed at the start of the ride. It must be something to do with the rolling speed of the trainer or something, and the restriction in the movement of the bike.

I'm creeping up top that magic target of mine, 3w/kg

I just had an amazing training day. I "won" the oval ride, if you don't include the pro dudes.

Oval ride, Tommy D showed up. There was a section of dirt today that split the group pretty early, from around 50 to less than 20. Danielson and Jon Garcia put the hammer through the flats and we had hit wittled down to about 15 guys by Carter lake (around mile 45 I think). Danielson hit it up the climb, gapped Garcia and one other guy, I came over the top 4th wheel. 6 of us regrouped and rolled FAST turns (they are by definition fast when 2 of the 6 are about to race in this big race in California). Crossed 34 and had to wait, and the second group cought us, bringing the numbers up to 10-12 or so. Hit the climb up to the little reservoir and Danielson gapped everyone but Garcia and myself and we rolled the 20mi back to town or so, and never saw the other group again. I rolled a couple turns with them but mostly had to sit in, I was just fried. Made it back to Fort Collins though, and got my first Oval win of the season.

Jon Garcia, Tom Danielson, Me. I'm a little out of my league here:

So, were they breathing hard after all that? Sweet ride, to be able to even hang with pros like that rocks. My teeny little engine was backfiring and coughing up smoke with the local club today. In the summer, there's a local pro (fast, but nowhere near the caliber of Tommy D) who sometimes rides with us, and I can sometimes hang with him in the hills, eyes crossed, hacking up a lung. Of course, that's when he's just stretching his legs. I gotta get stronger!

Tommy D is a whole different level, even compared to Garcia. He dropped Garcia and I on one of the climbs, and I actually passed Garcia. He's a big dude though, and had been doing a lot more work.

Even last year, I wouldn't have even fathomed having a ride like that. It just takes time.

Awesome ride and great post, Ze!

On a lowlier note:

Did the seasons's first VO2 max work.

4x4' @ 422w (118%, 4.9 w/kg). Felt just right.

5 hours tomorrow.

Why would you go at a high tempo and do sprints/vo2 efforts the day before a race?

4 hours, 254 watts NP

Best 20 min @ 326 watts, best 1 hr @ 305 watts. This was on a breakaway attempt starting after the 2nd hour. Had a couple Cat 2's and 3's in the main group, along with me and 1 other cat 4.

Increased FTP = VERY FUN GROUP RIDES

Last week I took the day off before the race, and I felt pretty good in the race. I didn't feel quite as good today, but hard to know what the difference was. I was planning on taking yesterday off, but I couldn't ride on Thursday so I wanted to get some training in.

It wasn't an important race at all. I'm a Cat 5, just trying to get mass starts and some experience before college racing starts.

And 3 days is a long time to be off the bike...

Why thank you!

In training news, negative splits are a bit harder than they seem like they would be. However, there was a slight headwind on the way out, so holding it stead the entire time might have been the better move anyway.

I can't wait until they post the results so I can see the times and how everybody else did.

ZeCanon, that is just about too cool, way to go!. Today was about as perfect a day in the NW as it gets in Feb. Sunny and nice. Rode 15 miles to the team ride, then proceeded to somewhat hammer for the next 60 miles (especially the hills), then took the long way home for another 26 miles = 101 - longest of the year. TSS for the day 362, 6,500' of up, 4025kj burn.

Biggest training week of the last 3 months; 309 miles, 17hrs 53mins, 16,040', TSS 1,025.3 Got the first road race of the season next Sunday, Cherry Pie

I slit my finger open today while taking the zip ties off my new floor pump. I'd always just used my frame pump, but after I broke a valve I decided it was time for a floor pump, so I bought a Joe Blow Sport today. Much easier than a frame pump.

I was cutting the zip tie with a knife, towards my finger. Brilliant. I got about 1/2" deep filet in my thumb, awesome.

Tomorrow is 72 miles with the team. Pre-riding the course for the road race next weekend. 4 laps of 18 miles each.

Word from the wise, do not do the shoot out at the end of a hard week of anaerobic work. If you expect to survive it, anyway.

Also, I've ****ed up my 4th wheel of the winter. Yet another nipple pulled off of the spoke. wtf...

I had a bunch of those in the first two races of this season. Ditch the alloy. Get it relaced with brass nipples.

Did a 36 mile pre-ride of the road course for next week. I was planning on 72, but they had other ideas, so I stopped too. Beautiful weather though, magnificent.

Did my first 'real' ride in two weeks. I'd been feeling guilty about riding since it represented a lot of missed opportunity to me from last semester. The weather was beautiful so I decided to go out and ride.

Picked a bit of a suicidal route. Did the hardest hill I know of in the area twice, after doing a lot of climbing. I also climbed up the road I crashed on almost a year ago. That was weird...

I bonked halfway through the ride. Whoops...

Also, my SRM offset drifted up, I'm guessing that means that my numbers were underestimated during the duration when it was drifting. I did a test by setting the offset while pedaling and everything after that was *MUCH* lower than it should have been (i.e. sprints in the low 100's hehe).

In any event, here are the stats from the ride:

Duration: 2:10:33 (2:21:51)
Work: 1177 kJ
TSS: 173.8 (intensity factor 0.894)
Norm Power: 223
VI: 1.49
Pw:HR: 100%
Pa:HR: 100%
Distance: 32.248 mi
Min Max Avg
Power: 0 1283 150 watts
Heart Rate: 0 252 0 bpm
Cadence: 29 252 73 rpm
Speed: 0 40.8 14.8 mph

So I guess the NP means that this was pretty much a 2 hr long SST workout. Ouch...

Quite a disconnect between the NP and Avg power. I guess a lot of intense climbing will do that.

Few new records (after offset was reset).

5 Sec power is at 1253 avg, with 10 sec at 1155 avg. I bumped into my coach and one of his training partners at the tail end of my ride. The training partner started a sprint and I jumped after him as hard as I could. This tells me that I should start my finishing sprint from about the 100m to go mark. Sounds like the plainville finish!

Anyway, that's a 5 sec of 19.13 w/kg. Wataahhh!!!

So I go out this morning and had a great training ride doing V02s. Later I find out a Pro from Team Type 1 was coming to ride with my local training group. I go. We hammer for 50 miles. I didn't get to ask his name.

I hurt now. Happy fricken Birthday to me.

Forgot to mention that I had to stop a few times because I thought my fork exploded. I hit a small pothole and my raceblade fender hit my downtube and made a really loud noise. Scared the hajeebus outta me!

Edit: Happy birthday subby!
