Mt Hood Solo Century (Photo Essay)

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was in a remote area and GPS reception was shotty. I wanted to make sure I had good data out of the ride - thus the Cateye.

With roads like that, how can you NOT ride 6+ hours.

I was starting a timed century on Saturday and I'm standing there with the timekeeper who is about to clock me out and I'm looking at my Edge that needs to be reset and telling him "WAIT! I need to reset first!!! Okay, now you can clock me out!"

Cereal breaskfast. 5 Clif Bars, 1 Luna Bar, 2 scoops of HEED, 6 bottles x 24 oz H20, 4 Gus (2 of which were caffeinated and staggered), 6" Subway Veggie Delight with no cheese and a small 20" Cherry Coke and 2 bottles of Gatorage with one roll of Spree candy. Recovery drink and granola bars waiting in the car, post ride.

It was the hardest ride of my life. At one point on the final leg of ascent (which spanned over 25 miles), I almost broke down emotionally. I was physically fine but your mind f***s with you when you are on the edge physically for so long.

Did you carry all that stuff or did you pick it up along the way...?

I know what you mean about the mental part. I rode the Blue Ridge Parkway last year, about 80 miles/day and 8,000-10,000 ft. of climbing per day. I was out there alone for long stretches and your mind can mess with you. Too much time to think...and if you start thinking about something like work, it gets stuck in your mind and its hard to get rid of it...much less when you start thinking about your own abilities or lack thereof, or focusing on a nagging little pain...

If I was to do it abain I probably would want to do with with a small select group of similar ability...

Awesome pictures, I could definitely see riding way more than I do with scenery and roads like that. I'm glad you mentioned how grueling a long ride is, the pictures don't tell the whole story.

That is a BIG effort for a solo ride. Great job. Thanks for sharing.

Well done for breaking through your mental barrier. After 6 hours in the saddle I would have hit my physical barrier for sure.

How did you carry all your gear?

I started with the HEED in the bottles and the 4 Clifs bars and Gus packets in the jersey. I carried a small Canon A510 camera, 2 packs of C02 and lever (which I had to use on a flat at mile 103). I stopped for lunch at Subway at the halfway point. I made one further stop at a 7-11 at mile 80 for the Luna and Clif bar and Gatorade/candy.

Everything was carried in my Assos jersey pocket. I refuse to use saddle packs based on looks alone.

Speaking as a refugee from Oregon, I think you should not hesitate to tell people that it really DOES rain 9 months out of the year there. Cold, cloudy, damp, depressing rain where everything turns to mud and moss. And the other 3 months? Temps in the 90's and humid. These pics are outstanding, but anyone thinking that they'll find those conditions on a regular basis, is just plain wrong. I wouldn't live there again for anything.

MIN, I have total admiration and respect for you, doing this ride solo! Congratulations, and thanks so much for sharing it here!
