I assume we're talking about high quality lightweights here? OK, so there were numerous low-volume custom builders in Germany, but you have those almost everywhere. How about a medium- to large-sized mass production company like Gitane, Raleigh, Bianchi, etc.? I have never heard of such a German company-- which seems kind of strange for the premier industrial nation in Europe.

Outside of their homeland german racing cycles seem to be quite unfamiliar. There were many, often small brands:

Apart from many very basic 1970s 10-speeds, Stollenwerk especially in earlier decades seemingly was quite well-known among german racing cyclists for their lightweights:

I had a Matthias Stollenwerk Bicycle once , It was a ten speed racing bike, and quite light and very well made . It was on a par with my old Raleigh Grand Prix from the early 70's, and made about the same time. The only Kettlers I have seen in my part of the US are exercise bikes except for a cargobike I once saw in a pawnshop . When I was a kid,I think my mother had a bike called a Wanderer . I think it may have been a three speed.

Not sure of the brand name or model, but it's a West German made 3 speeed with a 1971 dates S/A hub. A Craigslist find, paint is almost flawless, bike is 100% original.

A Markant Luxus-Klasse utility bike, guessing from the mid 80's. Lugged gaspipe frame. Simplex derailer and stem shifter. Malliard hubs with Rigida chromed rims, Regina freewheel, ITM stem with Italian made, hard plastic grips. Altenburger brakes. Internally wired 6v lighting.

I live in Germany and one of the better brands here is an Albuch Kotter. They are common in the south were Kotter Racing team had their stomping grounds. I found a really nice one with great lugs and full Campy Record for 290 euros. If you get lucky you can find one with pantographed forks and seat stays too.

My Grandfather had a small bicycle factory in Germany in the 1920's. He even employed a racer. Anyone seen or heard of a Pepi ?

Thanks for the info guys! They're certainly not en vogue but as you can tell by the sellers description you don't see too many german bikes here.

Hi,

This is my granpa's bike. He used it to go to work and to get the materials to build the family house in the 50's.
