Yet another Heron has landed
An American one this time! My Heron Randonneur arrived today after a fresh coat of powder from Groody Bros. I quickly re-installed the Stronglight headset to get some pics. Build plans will be Campy 8 speed triple. This maybe barely C+V, as it's from '97 or '98 but definitely has the C/V spirit.

Cool frame. I like the color. I feel like I remember British racing green being a stock color for the Herons when they first came out?
I think all the Herons were 700C. Did you have the canti bosses moved for 650B, or staying 700C?
It's also interesting to see Grant's interpretation of a "randonneur" bicycle. Definitely a lot more British in style than actual vintage French randonneur bicycles - rear rack mounts and fancy lugs are a little more British. Partly why I find the Rivendell offerings a little weird - they are a hybrid of a lot of different aesthetic sources - French, British, early mountain bike.

Groody Brothers did a nice job keeping the lug lines crisp. May I ask who made the decals?

I looked at several bikes on Portland CL, saw this one and asked Gugie to check it out for me. He said “sure!” And the next thing I hear from him is this pic of the back of his truck:

I didn't even ask Hugh if he wanted it for sure. At the price it was going for Idda been happy to keep it for myself!

That bike went through The Atelier, it was hard enough to get Hugh to try tires wider than 28mm, so it stayed 700c. I facilitated the purchase out of a Portland CL ad. It's close enough to my size for a good test ride with my co-pilot @Andy_K. I loaded up the handlebar bag with 10 pounds of shop tools to simulated touring, and found the front end to be a bit squirrely, so I added a bit of rake to the forks to lower the trail, which makes for good handling with a front load. Outside of that, the frame is stock.
GUGIEFICAZIONE!

as a dyed-in-the-wool C&V adherent you should send a letter of complaint to Waterford that their gear hanger lacks the wee hole to accommodate the spring end of a Campag Sport gear mech.

Look under the Bicycle Restoration link for a catalog download. It’s huge. I couldn’t find repro decals anywhere except from Waterford for an exorbitant price. I was in the process of designing my own when I stumbled across this site. Quality is very good.

I ran out of time.
The plan was to fill up the seat tube with lead shot so I could have a fighting chance of staying up with Hugh on the climbs.

I just picked up an 86 Schwinn Voyageur in what appears to be this exact color. It was called "British Pine". I call it BRG for "British Racing Green".

I found a Trek 2300 with Shimano 105 one time at a pawn shop. I had a friend looking for a road bike and he said he'd go over the next day to look at it. I told him right then and there, "either you buy it now or I'm buying it now. Which is it?". I'd been through the "should have bought it when you saw it regrets too many times before". He ended up getting it and still has it to this day. It's a gorgeous thing!

Herons started out as a joint venture between Rivendell, RONA Components, and Waterford in 1997. They were designed and built by Waterford and offered in two models - Road and Touring.
I bought a Touring model in 2001 or so when Rivendell was blowing out their remaining stock for only $750. Rivendell's Rambouillet (road) and Atlantis (touring) supplanted the Herons, and in 2002 the brand was sold to Todd Kuzma of Tullio's Cyclery in Illinois. Your frame is from that era.
The Rivendell-era frames had round-section fork blades and horizontal dropouts. Yours has a stouter fork and vertical dropouts, two smart improvements that Todd Kuzma specified.

... I forgot to say - beautiful color - looks fantastic!
Mine's kind of an odd dark greenish-blue. I'd post a photo, but it seems like I've forgotten how to so that. Hmmm.
