1964 Raleigh Sports
This project has been underway for 6 years. Six. Years. It’s finally done and I had a nice shakedown ride on the rail trail. The only glitch was the left crank, which I guess I test-fit at some point & then forgot to tighten!
The “saga” started with a 1954 Raleigh Superbe that I picked up from Craigslist with front end damage. I was going to add a 3-cog block to the Dyno-Four hub for a 12! speed Raleigh Clubman style bike. I never got around to fixing the frame but @pastorbobnlnh gifted me this Sports frame & the project migrated over.
Unfortunately the hub, cogs & Huret Svelto just would not align and fit in the rear end without major modifications that I just don’t have time or skills to address. I punted and laced up a regular AW hub; 4X because of the change in hub. The only parts which made the entire journey are all the original spokes & the rear mudguard bolts. Not kidding.
This is mutt of a “Clubman” has an old mtb spindle that magically fit the Raleigh BB cups, a Japanese crank; bars, stem & brakes from a Gran Prix, new aluminum rims, Newbaums tape & an Ideale saddle. The mudflaps are @rootboy prototypes.
This magnum opus would not have happened without all the friends I’ve made here on bikeforums and all the knowledge I’ve ingested from the site. Thanks!

He was told it would never work, nevertheless he persisted.... Chapeau on getting to the finish line, great looking build, makes me think of a path racer. If I ever end up living someplace flatter than hilly West Seattle I am going to get me one of them English 3 speeds.

Lookin' good! The only thing I would change is the position of the 3-speed trigger -- I like them right below the brake lever, almost brifter-style.
The hybrid cog-block / IGH transmission would have been fun -- I really liked my 4x3 (14-16-18-20 cogset on an AW hub)

This is a lovely bike and a heck of a project. I keep thinking I'd like to build a clubman one of these days. I just need to find the right British bike . . .

Thanks for the replies! I did try the trigger shifter under the right brake lever but it didn’t fit there. Might have been blocking the brake lever. I was a little bummed because I know that’s the traditional location.

I have a 54 Sports finished in a not so different style though I converted to 700c wheels. I installed one of the recent Sturmey Archer bar end 3-speed shifters on that bike and am quite happy with it. They are not outrageously expensive and work very well -- in my expereince better than trying to get an old trigger shifter properly positioned and functioning on a drop bar.

What led to the decision for center pull brakes?
As for the brakes, I cannabalized a Grand Prix for the cockpit & since its brakes were in very good condition I used them as well.
