Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Unidentified Track Bike

Hello,
I purchased this bike recently for $50 and It was claimed to be a Mercian. It is not. Just looking for some help. A nearby bike shop tech said he thought it might be French, late 70's handmade.

Any thoughts?

It won't let me upload pics yet but serial # is 4075617 its not a uniform punch either. Looks like each number was punched on its own.

You can just upload the photo to a image sharing site like imgur then link it.

So the bike has been rattle canned and is a gadded orange color with stickers nearly visible through the paint.

You are missing two important photos. Need close ups of the fork ends. Also, you will want to post this in the Classic and Vintage section. Members there will be of great help. Many here only have experience with current offerings.

I'm sure you noticed the numbers stamped on the lugs. Those indicate the degree of angle. The lugs might be Bocama, not certain. Another valuable bit of information is in regards to the tubing. Did you remove the fork and look inside the head tube? There might be evidence of ridges on the inside surface of the tubing which indicates type of steel.

Another thing that can be helpful is the components. There is no guarantee that the components on the bike itself are original, but if they are it can give helpful information regarding year of manufacture, etc. It appears that the bike has steel bars and Stronglight cranks, but hard to tell on my computer.

Thanks. The bike is in the shop having the crank and stem removed for painting. Should have it back today so I will post to the other forum as you instructed.

When you join forum and you need a certain number of posts to participate in something then go and join the forum. Don't just sit there and post "almost at 10" "need some posts" sort of stuff in your own thread. Be around and join one of my favorite online bike forums. Too many people come in and ask a question and leave right after missing out on some really interesting discussions and knowledge sharing.

Check with the C&V subform to see what it might be. Judging by the headset it is old probably pre-70s but I could be way off.

The bike was indeed posted to the C&V forum and the bike has been identified. Gitane Track Standard model was the consensus. https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...rack-bike.html
