Market St. in S.F. to go Car-Light, kind-of, sort-of, maybe

Several agencies in San Francisco are beginning to seriously consider removing private automobiles from a large section of Market St. https://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...MNGU1P4MO8.DTL

I like. I'd like to see more of this. This could be that rare infrastructure change that has widespread support here on A&S.

With the public transit system SF has, I know I have never needed a car when visiting friends there... and my friends don't own cars and live there... it is the MUNI system that can make this happen.

In an odd way this takes market street back to it's very roots.

Notice in this video, traffic moves at the pace of a cyclist, and the majority of traffic is pedestrian.

And that video was taken before the 1906 earthquake when the SF population was less than half what it is now and the SF Bay Area had less than 1/10th its current population.

they are talking about removing all vehicular traffic from a block here in town for the end of the summer. Not sure I'm in favor or not since this includes bikes

That doesn't mean much. You know Muni is messed up when you have to catch the 6:30am bus in Sunset to get to work at 8:00am in downtown, about 8.5miles, and your co-worker who lives in Fremont doesn't leave home until 7:00am.

Okay, I know this is a silly question on a bike forum, but since you could leave at 7:15 (or 7:00 if you're really slow) and arrive in plenty of time without even breaking a sweat, why do you leave earlier to ride the Muni?

I'm sorry. I wasn't born with a bicycle under my butt and did not know that 8.5 miles is a reasonably easy ride two years ago.

That said, 8.5 mi in 45 minutes without breaking a sweat though? That's an unrealistic expectation.
