I struggle with this, and i'm not an old guy. in the middle of the summer when i'm training and racing, i can eat everything i see and still lose weight
then i injure my knee, training stops, and i'm immediately putting on weight.

Descends like a rock
I've dropped from 255 to 220. I leveled off for a long time around 230 and have only recently been able to get the scale to start tipping down again. I had to start getting pretty radical with my calorie intake to get the weight to start coming off again despite doing over 100mi/week on the bike. Its amazing how your body can adjust to keep weight on.
Also, yes, riding does make you hungry.

I used to know people who would stop at two or three fast-food restaurants while doing centuries with the club.
It was always either pizza or donuts, all the time. However, they still weren't 'fat'!
I've found that most serious roadies are built similarly....

We've all heard it before, quasi tongue and cheek, that we're all too fat for this sport.
Excluding racers, why are so many roadies still fat? I know several of the middle-aged kind (ie, mamils) that can ride circles around me, that can afford to shed some pounds, but year in year out they've got that huge gut stuck in the middle. They eat relatively healthy, aren't huge alcohol drinkers, ride more often than me, so what gives?

Pizza.
A 10" pizza is about 300% of a 6" pizza. There's some food for thought.

I was fat. Maybe I'm still too fat for this sport, but all it took was tracking what went in vs what went out. I went from 210 -> 145 (@ 5'9") over the course of one season, and I'm keeping it off without even worrying about it. Once you have your portion control and snacking under control, it gets a lot easier.

Muscle is more dense than fat. So some of these "fatties" may be on an overall fitness program and have adding some muscle mass. We know cycling does not add much muscle mass to the body. Particularly the upper body. Maybe you are mistaking fat for muscle.

I've gone from 210 to fluctuating between 190 and 195 since I started commuting and road riding on weekends. I'm also eating a lot better. I do, however, have a sweettooth, and am eating a blo pop as I write.
