brake suggestions?

Hey guys, Ive been commuting with some old gran compe brakes/levers and while they look great I'd rather STOP at a light than go sliding in front of a car haha

I'm looking for more modern sidepulls. any suggestions?

p.s. I wouldn't mind getting them secondhand (as long as the price is right of course)

Are you beakes side pull or center pull? the first thing I would do is clean your rims really good with either some petro chemical or rubbing alcohol and maybe even some scotchbrite. The get new KoolStop pads like the 'cross pads like these

Or even something liek their continental that are all salmon compound.

Maybe some 90's era sidepulls. I can muster about $50-100. that's about as much as I can go. I try to be careful on the road but just yesterday I almost got hit and realized I need an upgrade.

sidepulls.
I think I might try this out; I did just wash my bike recently but the braking is still horrid. still have the OEM brakepads on them though haha

Are you looking for Daul Pivot brakes?

Or just newer/better regular side pulls?

If your thinking daul pivot sidepulls they can bought new from about $20 ea. like those Origin 8 shown above.

was looking for some nice duals, but I do want to see how much of a difference those kool-stop shoes/pads will make.

I was gonna say too, dual pivot brakes. Most of them should outperform any conventional sidepull brakeset because of their better mechanical design that give more balanced braking and more leverage advantage. Lots have been satisfied with Tektro's dual pivot brakeset. Specially their very reasonable price.

+1 The original DC levers and single pivots on my wife's 83 Trek 610 were killing her hands on long decents up here in the mountains. I swapped them out for Tektro Ergo levers and dual-pivots, and holy cow, does that bike stop on a dime. More importantly, they modulate wonderfully and she can brake down a long descent on the Blue Ridge Parkway without hand cramps, using two fingers on the levers.
