Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lots of these fast pace line issues can be settled in the parking lot before the ride. OP never stated what they were training for nor the milage. Not sure why this thread became a thing... OP was simply stating the rules of their Tuesday night ride.
But to say that there aren't any ego's... Who are you crappin"

You can't fake fitness. You either hang or not. I've known guys who were fast as ****, but have no common sense and all road debris finds them. You have to have a second sense for this stuff. You have to feel the pressure and feel or what's happening in front, to the side and behind you.

All my years of playing hockey prepared me well for fast pacelining. Red Wings Suck BTW.

I'd say you did your part then but that begs another question. With these sidewalk racers running stoplights, do they have their own protocol of what to yell? To warn others in sidewalk group when doing something especially stupid for instance? Or is it every man for himself?

I started riding with this girl recently. She's a bit squirrelly and definitely not a strong rider. Sometimes she veers a little too far into traffic and doesn't obey traffic rules. This morning, I noticed a car coming up behind us and, knowing her tendency to drift, I yelled, "Car back!" She gave me this mean glare and replied, "Why do you have yell 'Car back!' like that. Can't you just say, 'There's a car behind us'?" I try my best not to be a jerk, but I admit that I sometimes yell at her. Did I mention she is my 8-year-old daughter.

So you're drafting behind an 8 year old girl?

You should consider trying intervals.

This is my partner whenever we ride around town together or out to eat.

He says the same thing about "car back" - "Why does it have to be so blunt, can't you say something more pleasant"
Me: "Umm, it's easy to say and to the point."

He also likes to run over every single twig, branch, pot hole, etc.
"Why did you just run over that branch in the road"
"I didn't want to veer out of my lane"
"Well then, you can change your own flat then."

Warms my heart to hear you say that. Unless you're being sarcastic, then it also warms my heart.

It's when strangers jump on mid-ride and don't realize that it's not just a group of bike riders.

Actually, the guys in the group all knew and respected each other and had nothing to prove to each other. It was just a fun hammer ride with a quickly rotating double paceline. Seriously, no egos. I know it's hard to believe - cyclists being cyclists and all - but I'm not crappin'.

And some people don't. And they don't know that they don't.

Yep, saw myself against the fence as you rounded the first bend, yelling at you for not following the car ahead closely enough

Did a couple laps there last night. Had the sound turned off so nobody could yell at me. (unless you count texting in ALL CAPS)

We make every rider in our group read this, in it's entirety, before they are allowed to ride with us.

If someone is wearing headphones, is it better to yell at them, or use hand signals?

I say yell at them. This would give them the chance to put together an NFL Bad Lip Reading in their head.

I signed "your saddle is too low and you're too fat for this sport" to a Fred in earbuds last week. I haven't seen him on the road since, so I'm assuming he sold his bike and has picked up golf.
