This is a classic example of what I call the jackass “n.” People new to the group are painfully polite, and the most experienced cyclists are helpful and polite. It’s the intermediate guys who become the biggest d’bags. They have enough legs and experience to torture the newbies, but not enough to do anything else.

You're right in the observation that 'car up!' 'car back!' is a Fred phenomena for the most part. I started riding competitively in the Bergen/Rockland/NY city area where there is ALWAYS a car behind you or in front of you - so nobody there generally calls them out, Freds included. I'm in a more rural area now where the Freds are forever screaming this stuff - and it really cracks me up. They'd all go insane in a more urban/suburban area- and/or they'd get over this pointless practice.
I'd rather be "fred" than "dead."

We generally call out car back when we are in the middle of nowhere on rides, just to make sure no one decides to pull off or whatever in the group... Really not a big deal.

So I was "that" guy today. I did the normal Tuesday morning "crit" practice ride with my team. The ride is open and really anyone can join in. I've done the ride about 10-12 times and never had any issues. So about halfway through, I'm still near the front of the group (which is rare). We're riding 2-wide and there's about 30 of us. One of the guys up front gives some sort of hand signal and people start shifting all over the place. I wasn't familiar so I just stayed put and kept pedaling. Turns out, the signal was to form a rotating pace-line for a while. So, the guy behind me starts yelling at me. I couldn't understand what eh was saying but soon I realized he was yelling "pedal pedal" so I would move up. Still oblivious to the fact we're getting single file I move up and figured I'm jut taking a pull. Now he yells "move over move over" and I realize it's a paceline situaiton. I move over to the front and as he passes to get in front of me he gives me the "What the hell is wrong with you" line. I apologize and let him know I didn't realize we were getting into a paceline. He looks at me and snickers.
So, it sucks getting yelled at. I will be more aware next week. FWIW, this has never happened on this ride so I wasn aware of the super-secret squirrel handsignals for rotating paceline.
Cheers
Rob

There's always a guy, the self-appointed Chapeau of the training ride, who's always yelling that we're rotating the wrong way.

I don't ride in the Bay Area, but I will be out there in March.
I try to drill this idea into the heads of the new racers. Some get it once I explain the reason why. Some just do it correctly only because they have been yelled at and don't understand it. In the long run it is all good.
