Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was riding along an MUP, I had right of way while the cop did not. He did not obey the stop sign and I barely stopped in time. There was another cyclist with me, I thought I did something wrong because you'd think cops follow the law right? I was surprised but what can you do? Yell? Bang on his hood? Kinda unfair if you ask me. Anyone else had something like this happen to them? I wanted to report him but I doubt that would have done any good.

You know cyclist rights are low when a cop cuts it close to you on an open road. Happened to me on a rainy day this week.

Being a police officer doesn't magically make you a better driver. You'd think the extra training would help, but they are also quite distracted with their laptops in the front. Someone here was clipped by a police car. Cop didn't stop. No injury, I don't think the guy even crashed, but still, that's not following the 3ft rule.

I say just report it. Maybe nothing happens, maybe his superior gives him a lecture, maybe it goes in a file and if it happens again and gets reported there is a growing body of evidence.

The good news is that dashcams are nearly universal now, so if he did smash into you there would've been footage of him blowing through the stop sign and smacking you.

I was run off the road by getting clipped from a cook county sheriff a couple of years ago. I flipped down a hill and luckily I wasn't injured. The cop didn't even stop, and when I reported it, they told me without squad car number there was nothing they could do. I didn't pursue it because it is called "Crook County" for a reason.

Haha yeah, and the funny thing was he didn't even say sorry or anything just drove by. You'd think with the growing amount of bike cops they would have more respect for us.

I know it doesn't make you a better driver. But I'd like to think since they somewhat enforce the law, they would be more cautious drivers.

Yeah you're right, you probably have a lot more credibility in these guys:

And they wonder why the 41 has a reputation for being dumbasses.

Different systems do different things, of course, but GENERALLY dash cams aren't actively recording unless the emergency lights are activated and then they only "pre-record" 30 seconds before the activation. If this guy had his emergency lights and siren active, then he's an emergency vehicle and automatically has the right-of-way.

Yes, yes, just because they're an emergency vehicle doesn't absolve them of any liability, I'm simply stating the law.

AND, I'm not arguing with anyone in particular; I'm just putting the information out there.

You didn't use enough images; for some people, the 41 is a picture book.

Cyclists should base their assumptions on the laws of physics rather than on the traffic laws. The former have much more impact in the grand scheme of things, and no one ever breaks them.

Depends on how much trouble you want. Most people would do nothing.

There have been rumors about outlaw neutrinos with lead feet, though.

My bad police incident was on a MUP had slowed to pass a group of people walking and started to kick it again around a corner and there was a motorcycle cop pointing what I thought was a pistol at me. I started breaking and he tracked me with the pistol. I thought this is it...turned out to be a radar gun because of complaints of cyclist speeding (the limit was 10 mph) he said I was doing 11 and let me pass......I was doing about 16 or 17 right before the pedestrians. It still was a freaky thing and I braked hard not knowing what was going on. Geez just shoot a couple of us to get the point across rather than scare all of us half to death thinking you are.
