Interesting that the author thought the only lugged frames that Schwinn made in 1973 were "European-made".

There were a couple of things that I thought were interesting... The comment about the "World Voyageur" name but yet tying the bike directly to Schwinn. the European made Schwinn thing, the six speed cog thing, the double butted CrMo thing- the 41" wheelbase thing- the mention of cyclo-cross, the mention of the rando bars, and the discussion about the ridge on the tire...

Coincidentally saw this on eBay today and your post made me think of it - pictures aren’t great but maybe this is it? Looks pretty dangerous to me.

Orange is my favorite color.

IIRC from my middle school geography days, Japan was briefly relocated to Europe during the early 70s but I don’t remember why. Maybe it had something to do with bikes.

Though I am aware of the differences between the World Voyageurs and the later '80s touring Voyageurs like mine, I do wish the colour palette had been a bit more exciting instead of the late '80s gray with red transfers scheme of my Voyageur. The '89 was a nice green, and the earlier models all were painted in livelier colours. These World Voyageur paint schemes are fantastic, exuberant even.

Here is a bicycle just like mine, a '90 Voyageur, including the bar end shifters that I like very much. I also have a Brooks saddle, but it is a new B17, not vintage like this one. I've had some good spring morning commutes on my Voyageur these past few days. Now that the road salt is gone, it can come out and play. Every year for the first few rides I am reminded of how great a rider these bikes are.

I just got a Voyageur a couple days ago. I sort of like that the appearance is unremarkable, doesn't look like anything special but is deceptively light and fast.

Apart from my enjoyment of rich colours, I also like the fact that my Voyageur is quiet and unassuming looking for tours in particular. What tires are those? I'm using the Pasela wire-bead tires, 27" x 1 1/4". I've had a puncture or two since I installed last year, but they have done well on my commute despite the post-winter nasty roads so far. I keep them pumped at 95 pounds rear and about 85 pounds front.

They're Bontrager T1s 27 x 1 1/4. They measure out at 33mm wide + tall on these rims. I've had them for a few years and put about 4,000 miles on them and they still have some life left in them. I just put them on this bike because the tires that were on it I'm pretty sure were the originals, paper thin sidewall file tread jobbies. I rode em for a few miles and they were sweet supple heaven but they're dry and I don't trust them to hold up for very long. The T1s are decent tires, few flats and have quite good grip wet/dry on most surfaces, nice soft-ish compound, not too heavy at around 450g. I don't think they have any extra puncture protection and I don't use any. Thank you for asking! Paselas are on the list of potential shoes for this one to prep it for commuting duty. For a 32mm tire I inflate to similar pressures, I'm 185 lbs and usually commute with some luggage.

From the word around here, I think I should have bought the Pasela Tour Guard tires, which have some flat protection while delivering an excellent ride. I think on my upcoming multi-day tours I'll likely have to patch every now and again. I don't mind that as much now since they are easy to take off and reinstall, but we'll see what happens.

I'd alluded to it- but no one else picked up on it- I'd always read that Schwinn was attempting to put some distance between All American Schwinn and the Japanese made World Voyageur by using the previously used, Schwinn owned "World" marque- so it was plausible enough to distance themselves from the Oriental bikes if they flopped (or it was a PR flop). I've never owned one- but I seem to recall it being stated that the word "Schwinn" is nowhere on these bikes- so if you didn't know- this was from a Japanese brand called World. But this review is brazenly and straight out ties Schwinn and World together without even a hint that Schwinn may have been attempting to obfuscate the Schwinn/World connection.

So did Schwinn actually use the World marque in case of a commercial or PR failure- or was that just conjecture on someone's part that just happened to become 'canon?'

This is likely true. I also have a 78 World Sports, the first model imported from Giant,in Taiwan. The quick-release tabs on the brake levers were the only parts that mentioned Schwinn. My World Voyageur came to me as a frame set, so I can't speak to that. The headbadge is the same, sans the red.
