Here are my wife and I this past Thursday. We tossed the tandem in the SUV and dropped it for repair, and we took the long way back to the house.

@Alcanbrad, I hadn't heard of the Eastern Tandem Rally. I see we missed it, but I added myself to the mailing list. Maybe we can go next year. My wife is still warming up to tandeming, so it's not a sure thing.

Yes, TRP hydraulic discs front and back. We also have a third brake--a rim brake on the back that the stoker controls. The bike is about 13 year old steel Land Shark. It was custom made for someone else and then hung in their garage for 5 years after 1 30 mile ride. We bought it from them about 8 years ago. It originally had dura ace rim brake in front and small avid disc in the back. We added the rim brake for a little extra braking power for when the disc got hot. About 8 months ago we upgraded to the TRP's. The new brakes along with the new Co-Motion disc brake ready steel fork added some weight (bike wasn't too light anyway--probably now weighs about 39 lbs), but the brakes work very well. And yes, I could tell that the brakes were getting hot a couple of times, but we just stopped for a while to let them cool and enjoyed the view. I think a more courageous and skillful descender than me could have come down the mtn with our brake set up without stopping.
We have the TRP Hy/Rd brakes on the back (we have a co-Motion Roadster) and I just added Shimano Deore XT V brakes to the back as an "emergency" brake. Our total weight is probably pushing 425 lbs, so braking on a big downhill can be exciting. I have it connected to a Tektro cross brake lever on the captain's handlebars, so I can only use one or the other rear brake at a time.

I was wondering, how do you tell if your disc brake is getting too hot? Does it start making noise, or fading away?

Thanks,

Graeme

Yes, when it gets hot it starts making noise and also gets more "grabby". I haven't kept braking long enough for it to fade away (although I've had that happen with other discs that got hot). We don't mind stopping and taking a break, although there aren't too many descents steep enough and long enough and twisty enough to require a stop. We have our brake lever for the extra rear rim brake on the stoker's bars. That set up works well for us so we can use all three at once if desired. Makes for interesting conversation on the long descents: Captain: "Brake". Stoker: "Brake". Captain: "Off". Stoker "Off" etc etc

Wow, those pictures brought back some great memories!

Graeme, I'm really happy for you and Alexa. You've become a strong tandem team, and I can't wait to ride our new tandem with you two again.

This is Mrs. 124Spider and me riding during the second day of last month's Bike MS Deception Pass Classic, hoping we'd finish the 54-mile ride before the rain and hail arrived. We didn't, but it was fun anyway!

This is one of our rides near Stuttgart, Germany during a special tour arranged by a local newspaper. Weather was great this year, so we have done a lot of kilometers on different bikes. This is our full suspensioned MTB with Xentis carbon wheels.

The way up with fun....

Riding so fast your legs were blurred! Impressive.

We went on the tandem to our local Cyclovia event, and the kids wanted to ride in grandpa’s bucket bike. However, they quickly changed their minds and wanted to ride the “mommy daddy Isabelle Evelyn” bike. So we went back and got the triplet.

I think it it will be the last time my older daughter rides without a stoker kit.

Dad, kiddo, and the twins. Yes they're twins, 21mo. The boy doesn't fit in 3T clothes or #6 diapers any more, and for the girl we can't find 2T pull-ups.

I finally have enough posts to contribute to this thread! We love our tandems; my kids are growing up thinking they're normal. This morning's ride was 26 miles round trip, three up on the quad since mom was working.

Unusual photo

I expect that like many tandem riders, we have very few photos of ourselves. However, the other day we came across our photo in an unexpected place. While looking at the Google street view of a road (California Highway 84, near San Gregorio) we often ride I saw what looked like a tandem team. On closer inspection I recognized that it was us.

Great posting. For serveral years we rode a Co-motion triple with our daughter. The following is the only photo we have of the three of us.

It was taken in Zurich at the end of a trip we took together when our daughter was 12.

Oh man I'm definitely going to need to get another tandem. I went in on a craigslist one with an ex and we rode it a ton but she wound up with it. My current lady friend has a very small kids one that I can try to get a picture on, but we're both VERY into bikes so I think it's a good reason to get something awesome...
