Well, I am tired of waiting for the west winds. I am heading to the mounts to ride Sat in search of Clean air. With no Snow and ice should be a good day to take a road trip.

@cccorlew I'm glad that you have a mask (press the metal thing so that its snug around the bridge of your nose) but the minimum required is the N95 mask. It has that little vent thing. Lowes and Home Depot are out of them but Kelly Moore Paints is giving them out free. The one closest to you is 1014 Fitzuren Road, Antioch. 925 778-1359

I have had marginal success getting really early and riding. (I am NOT one of those people) and its ok. Riding after work sucks thistime of year anyways because no sunshine. The smoke seems definitely less in the morning.

I'm watching Purpleair.com and I'm seeing Central Contra Costa looking better every minute. East is still behind, but getting better.
I rode in a freaking downpour today, got cold and soaked, and was grateful for the opportunity. Peace and love to those up north. Hope the rain helps more than it hurts.

Nice to be back riding again but I feel like I have lost quite a bit of momentum. Can 16+ days off the bike make you lazy? Once I'm moving I seem to do OK but I guess I'm having a hard time getting back on track. Anyone else?

I don't know about lost momentum, but I swear I've lost VO2 max from the smoke. I wonder if it heals, or this is the new norm.

But today it felt so good to take deep breaths that I enjoyed pushing myself. Not especially fast, but I felt refreshed and invigorated, not lazy or limited.

You are lucky. One collared mountain lion wasn't, even as smart as he was.
It seems that the big cat had a habit of using a drainage culvert beneath the freeway to avoid cars and human contact, even when it was almost filled with water (and it's very long). GPS tracking confirmed this time after time..
This time they found the poor beast dead with burnt paws...he not only used the pipe but in an attempt to avoid contact with the humans fighting the wildfires he went into the burnt area and it took his life.

The residents of Paradise were allowed in to the town today for the first time since the fire. I was hoping to salvage the campy wrenches I got in the 70s

Needs Repair
This is the last racing bike I owned that sported a proper pair of sew ups. I won the Mt Tam Hillclimb as a Cat 3 waaaay back in ‘91 on this. The fork must be in the now gooey ash heap somewhere. There is a huge mess to deal with to try and find anything smaller than a bike frame.

I read somewhere Reynolds spent a couple million developing the mechanical butting proces for this titanium tubing. 2004 or so Lemond Victorie Classic, I got the frame set off of Craigslist. I put my foot into the original fork at 10 mph and replaced it with an Enve. Full DA 7801, ti post saddle and skewers, a bit under 17 lbs.

I was worried you were offended by this post, as it could appear to be making light of the Camp (Paradise) Fire.
That certainly wasn't my intent. The video was posted in August. The Camp Fire started in November.
You are more than welcome to post whatever you want here, and we are all very interested in what you have to say, and I am sure there are many of us here who would like to try to help.

I smell smoke...
My son (5 1/2 years old) and I went out for a bike ride yesterday. We've had a wet winter and the first warm days waited until late April to show.
On one of our first real warm days, the sky was a little hazy and my son said: "I smell smoke". He seemed concerned that the air wasn't safe to breathe and was questioning if we should head back inside. We live in Petaluma and have been spared from any of the really nasty fires. It's been 6 months since Paradise. Almost 10 months since Carr, and 19 months since Tubbs. Even in our community where we've been spared, even after a wet winter and a late spring, the first hint of smoke paralyzes the imagination. I can't imagine what it must have been like for the families who were directly impacted. I love the North Bay, I can't imagine living anywhere else... but these fires are a mutha!

Because I was there at the Tubbs fire I do sort of have a little bit of a freak out when I smell smoke. On the way home the other day, I had the car window open and smelled a fire. I looked and saw it was in the area of my house. I rushed home and was so thankful that I was not a victim.
It was actually four blocks from me, on my ride route. Thankfully everyone got out okay and are all safe. 12 people live in that house.
