Sadly, you're correct.

However, as often as not, these laws are put in place to at least give cyclist and the authorities the 'teeth' needed to press charges or enforce tickets for other wise 'legal', but dangerous or aggressive driving.

It is worse than, that. A driver has to gauge three feet, at speed(15-50mph). When the passenger-side door. Blocks a motorist from accurately seeing how close they actually are to a cyclist.

3ft is not that much. But if you get hit and they are caught they add this to the charges.

The 'Close Pass' laws, are useless. They don't take into account, a driver having to gauge distance, through the passenger-side door panel.

Oh gosh you guys...... y'all a going to gripe if they miss you by 30 inches while thinking it's 36 inches when before they were just happy to miss you by an inch?

It is always best to bring a tape measure on a ride. So if the vehicle seems close, just whip the tape measure out and measure.

I always TAKE something when I am going somewhere, I....TAKE THE LANE. A tape measure is useless, at speed. A cyclist using a tape measure at speed. Would not survive.
