New From Arizona - Found this Bike in a dumpster!

Hey everybody,

My name is Joe and I am from Lake Havasu City AZ. I recently found a vintage Specialized Stumpjumper in the dumpster. This bike has renewed my childhood love for biking. I have no doubt this forum is going to help me considerably. I am going to ask for help - but have to hit the 10 comments first. (:

What a great find! Are you going to keep it mostly stock? Or convert it to like a drop bar?

Puts new meaning to the phrase "Another man's trash is another man's treasurer." I need to go dumpster diving in your area lol.

Welcome! You lucky man! Did you find that now during the "virus crises"? I hear bikes are in high demand now and someone goes to throw away one...lol

Whats the bike's problem?

I'd like to keep it stock.

I think I am going to have to replace:
  • Cables (very stiff)
  • Sprockets (teeth worn down and broken)
  • Chain
  • Shifters and Deraileurs (nothing feels right when shifting)
I already replaced tubes and tires - it rode great minus the shifting problems. (Chain popped and broke two spokes)

That's where I am with it right now.

Perhaps you can keep the housing and measure new ones against to make it easy.

Is it a freewheel or cassette?

UHHH.
The last time I changed out tubes I used two butter knives and it took me half a day.

So - I will have to do some research to answer this question.

Thanks. I feel kind of bad continue to post in this thread - I want to hit my 10 post quota so I can post pics and ask for help. I don't feel like I can offer anything other than a one word post to any other thread.

The bike find may well be as hard a work to clean but surely less risk of infection.
