not seeing value in carbon cranks [yet?]
I just weighed two cranks, one a new carbon shimano dura ace and, an old [30 years?] campagnola crank...
these two units were very close in weight - the shamano was .2 onces lighter....
are there other advantages to carbon - say is it stiffer?

Agreed and basically you cannot really beat Shimano Cranks 105 and above for shifting and performance in my opinion. It really is what works and for mortals not pros Shimano Cranks with Shimano drivetrain are pretty consistently reliable. Carbon Cranks are not a better option.

Keep in mind that the Hollowtech II crankset includes the spindle. A typical external bottom bracket weighs 100g. A typical square taper bottom bracket like that for the old Campy crankset weighs 250g to 320g.

Also keep in mind that weight isn't the only advantage. Greater stiffness-to-weight ratio means that they can be either freaky stiff for the same weight or really light for the same stiffness, or both a fair bit stiffer and lighter than aluminum at the same time. There are some aluminum cranks lighter than my FSA SL-K Lights but none I've tried that feel quite the same when you really stomp on them.

I did the math on my recent build and opted to go crabon to hit weight.
Easton EC90: arms and spindle 352g + 30/46 chainrings 182g + BB 91g = 625g
GRX810: arms, spindle, and rings 722g + BB 77g = 799g
As for the cost, its your money; only you can decide "if its worth it or not." I've smeared a bit of lipstick on my pigs...
I also have an Al GRX crank and the EC90 is stiffer, GRX shifts better but only a tiny bit so. Easton has lower Q and road chainline, and those were other factors; its not just weight and cost.
