The DAMn - Day Across Minnesota

Notices
Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

The DAMn - Day Across Minnesota

I don't expect any Pulitzer or Academy Awards here... but, I wanna share my ride report from the 2018 DAMn:
https://bikesbeersstuff.blogspot.com...t-18-2018.html

And some GoPro footage - think of this is a video slideshow (no fancy editing here)

I'm excited to share my GoPro footage with the crew creating a documentary about The DAMn, I can't wait to see what they do with it.

BTW - If you're planing to take in both of these masterpieces, start with the Blog post since the YouTube video has very little context (just the guy that never shuts up LOL).

Well, I’m not worthy. Thinking I’m a badass doing the race the lake in 4:41. Pff. Hella report, Toad! Hella day too. How does one train for 20 hrs in the saddle? Furk. I started to cramp with 22 to go and at 12 out, if I stood to stretch my quads would have locked up. Did you upgrade the wheels on your radar?

How much gain gain was that ride?

I did ride the PH24 one week prior - 24 hour neighborhood race - mostly to work on my night riding ... like keeping awake and alert at 3:00AM. I did about 125 miles and roughly 13 hours of riding. Otherwise, I had no idea how I was going to hold up with 20+ hours on a bike.

These are the stock Riddler 700x45c - https://www.wtb.com/products/riddler-45c - LOVE these tires! Great for a rider that has poor bike-handling/confidence... also great in the early AM beach sand!

The route is a lot of "down"; right up to the end when you get some rollers, no big climbs (it's MN!). I tracked 7,300 ft gain, the start was 630 ft above the finish line. https://www.strava.com/activities/1781765893/analysis

Wheels. Not tires. We’re the stock wheels adequate?

50% attrition! Must feel great to just finish this type of ride.

Funny, we have our coffee and cigs and grumble off to 8 or ten hours of work. But give us 20 hours of self torture in the dirty heat and we suck that stuff down with glee.

I cant wait to get a gravel bike

Time to start making plans for 2019, that DAMn ride is back for it's third year on August 3, 2019!

Here's the promo video for the 2019 race and promo for the documentary about the 2018 DAMn

https://vimeo.com/305795905

Just have to point out that cool footage at 0:32 (sunrise), that'd be my GoPro footage So happy that Nick can do something cool with the footage, cause I lack editing skills to make a high-quality finished product.

I was tickled to see an early edit of the DAMn documentary at the riders' meeting on Saturday night. My footage and my silly face show up a lot in this movie. My understanding is that the film maker will enter this in a film festival later this year.

There was a lot of loose stuff through the day. One buddy got a pic of the road grater working the route ... very nice of the locals to give us freshly grated gravel! I didn't think he road were a lot worse than last year. But the part I remember being very sandy - roughly mile 25, riding it in the dead of the night - was flooded this year, so we were walking that section of road.

The high temps in the afternoon, blocked up gut, and knee pain were slowing me down. Overall, it was a great day, I got in just before 7:00, nearly 2 hours faster than last year.

It's posted, grab a big cup of coffee or a pint, and settle in for a read ....

The Toad's 2019 DAMn Ride Report:

https://bikesbeersstuff.blogspot.com...damn-2019.html

Now I'm just waiting for a notification from the Pultizer committee - like a cease and desist order.

The link to YouTube is in the blog - but here's a direct link if you don't want to scroll through this long blog

The DAMn is now a film on Amazon "Delta of Spirit" This Toad is so humbled to be featured on both sides of the camera in this film.

Also for the local screening of Delta of Spirit, I was invite to join the on-stage panel with Nick (director), and other riders featured in the film.

Left-to-right: Nick, Toad, Ben, Steve, Bal, & John

I responded to some peer pressure and signed up for the damn this coming summer. I have great trepidation. I've never done more than 100 miles on gravel or 150 miles on tarmac, and I just don't know if I have the endurance. I picture paralyzing leg cramps somewhere in the last 1/3 of the event. I guess I have my work cut out for me this spring....

My longest day going into my first DAMn was 150 miles ... For everyone riding the DAMn, it's a learning experience. Learning and your gear, body and mind.

If you're interested, we'll host a Q&A session for riders and support crews. It'll June or July near Hopkins. DM me if you'd like to join us.

Having grown up in MN, I would really like to do this one some day. At my age, I guess I better not postpone it for too long, though.

Not sure your age, but I'm inspired by John (featured in the film) is racing at 80 years old. He'll make his third attempt in August - in years past he's made check point 2 (120 miles) and check point 3 (186 miles). We're all hoping 2020 is his year to complete the DAMn ride!

(afterthought - for reference, John is on the right of the photo above from the Delta of Spirit panel)

From Facebook post:

THE LAST DAMN

As we reflect on 2020, we want you all to know that we are thankful for you, our gravel family. Together we have traversed an unspeakable number of miles, taken wrong turns, crashed out, bled, pulled each other up and gutted it out…together. You’ve got grit. With that, we are stoked to announce that The Day Across Minnesota will return for a 5th and final year on August 14th, 2021!

Registration opens on Saturday, January 2nd at 8am CST. More info about the 2021 edition will be forthcoming. To those who deferred last year, we will be in touch. Mark your calendars and join us for what will undoubtedly be the most challenging, most rewarding, and most memorable DAMn ever. The Last DAMn!

Kind Regards, Trenton & Erik
