wondering if anyone has done this?
i have an idea for some handlebars that im sure has been done already. the main concept is to get something like some low to medium rise bmx bars, flip em upside down and then bend the handles back towards yourself a little; keeping them angled and not straigh up and down.
sort of a variation of drop bars.
sorry if thats vague but does anyone know of or seen anything like this?

I was at the Glenn Curtiss Museum last month and they had a replica of his 1906 land speed record motorcycle and the bars looked a little like that IIRC. Other than that...

Sounds like a common mod back in the day before drop bars were cheap. I've seen pictures of Raleigh 3 speeds set up like this. Penny-farthing bikes used what sounds like a similar bar.

Try it with northroad bars. A lot of bikes used to have bars like that in the early part of the last century. I think velo orange sells a replica which is not a kludge but is designed to be used "upside down."

cool thanks for the replies. ive always been a fan of naked street motorcycles and ive been trying to think of something that would give me a similar look from the front.

kinda broke right now so ill prolly have to scour craigslist but thats the idea. Clip on bars was the combo of words i was looking for.

Sometimes being broke forces you to use your imagination. My current project is on a tight shoestring budget. It's turning out better and more rideable than I'd hoped.

sweaty dirty, I flipped some over on my Marin and they got me lower, just felt like I was gonna eat the stem. The Marin has a mountain bike type stem and it is way up in the air for an upright position. Ended up ditching them for a donated flat bar from a friend. Imagine the bars in the image flipped over. They had more bend and rise than these and were crazy wide, worked OK though.

I’m always keeping my eyes open at garage sales and such for part bikes. Those bars came off an old Schwinn that was completely gone. Bars and steel fenders were perfect for some reason.
I once saw a junk bike for $5 that had a beautiful rear rack on it and offered the lady just $5 for the rack she could keep the bike. She said no so I offered her $8 for just the rack and she said no. so I bought the bike for $5 and took the rack off and was trying to figure out how to get the dang bike in the car when a guy came up and asked me if I knew where there were any more bikes for sale. Haha he got a free bike. He was just lucky it didn’t have a great set of bars on it.

lol, it would have been hard to ride it with only a stem to steer with! I used to help a few riders out at the pedicab company that I rode for last year. We were always looking for the tall and wide handlebars that came with older 1" steerer type, cheapo mountain bikes. Every once in a while something would show up with some smooth mustache bars or something cool like that. I've kicked myself more than once for not picking 'em up for my own use.
