brooklyn winter commuting (cross post)
hi all apologies for the cross post i think i chose the wrong forum for this to begin with.
i'm new to nyc, these forums, and to bike commuting. i've been here a few months and commute every day from east williamsburg to dumbo, absolutely love it and very keen to keep commuting thru the winter.
i've been collecting information on winter cycling for a couple weeks now. not all of it is nyc specific and i'm trying to figure out what's necessary and what's overkill so that i can start getting ready.
so far i think i want a beater with fenders and thick tires. but do i need studded? i read i had to glue one side of the tire to the rim, necessary? how do i take care of the bike thru the winter? if i have to leave it outside at work, should i bother bringing it inside at home? is it reasonable to expect to ride every day of the nyc winter or are some days not worth the hassle? do i just dress as i would if i were walking in the same weather? does anyone here commute thru winter on the same route and have any specific tips? i go thru 5-10mins of industrial and residential area before getting onto the kent bike path around n 10th st, then i follow that onto flushing and into dumbo. are there likely to be sections that won't be cleared? how do they clear the bike paths on flushing and williamsburg st w that are behind concrete barriers, it doesnt look like a car would fit in there, is there a special vehicle for clearing bike paths?
no doubt i'll find out answers myself soon enough but any info you can offer in the meantime would be much appreciated!
thanks
