Had a younger (around 30 year old) friend over for dinner that is an awesome guitar player and we started talking about music. He told me that he is listening to various versions of "Good Morning Little School Girl" right now and I asked him if he ever heard the Grateful Dead version. He was unaware. I pulled out the vinyl that I bought way back when and it is the monaraul (sp?) version because that was $3 then as opposed to the $4 stereo version and I was all of 12 years old at the time. I don't think that I had played that bit of vinyl in over 20 years. Not a bad version of the song, BTW.
We then listened to "Morning Dew" on the other side of the LP. I have heard much better renditions of that tune. Even the Jeff Beck/Rod Stewart version on "Truth" is better. (What is the opposite of damning with faint praise?)
After that we went to "Workingman's Dead" and that is many orders of magnitude better music.
Then I found out that he doesn't know any Elvis Costello. I am making his aim true as we speak.

Workingman's and Bear's Choice are the only two really good Dead albums, if you ask me.

thanks dude! I haven't heard that song (she wants revenge) in a few years and had forgotten about it. Added bonus, sin city's one of my favorite films from the last dozen years.

Every time I listen to "Dire Straits" (the first album and one of the greatest ever first albums for any group) I think of Chet Atkins. Chet is a very under-appreciated guitar genius with the "blues/rock" guitar crowd. That man could play.

Booker T and the MG's. Good stuff. I remember playing something from them in a pick-up band in the mid 60's when I was in grade school as part of a required "talent show". I was playing electric organ even though I was a guitar player. Unfortunately I was the only kid in the group that had any keyboard training so it became my job. it didn't really matter, though. The drummer was REALLY good and very cute to the girls, so the rest of us didn't matter at all.

Reminds me that my country phase is still going strong.
atm: I fall to pieces each time I here this song.
EDIT: I hate to admit that I recently heard Leanne Rimes do this one and was quite moved. It's on youtube.

Atleast you like a lil country...
The sincerity and heartfelt-ness of this music can't be beat. One may or may not like the kind of sentiments, tonalities and melodies of vintage country music, but I don't believe one can argue with that statement.
ATM:
Antonio Carlos Jobim - entire Wave album
Always on my "recently played" list.

I think that I have educated Spawn I well.
When he was about 10 years old I was playing some Captain Beefheart and he said "What is this? Why don't you play more of this? It is really good!" To be honest I was playing some cuts off of "Clear Spot" and that is a bit more accessible to most people, but still it was quite a shock to me. You don't expect a 10 year old kid to understand a deconstruction/reconstruction of "Delta Blues".
Spawn I has grown up in a house where I sit him down to listen to Miles Davis. And Howlin' Wolf. As well as Weird Al and the Ramones. And Hank Williams.
And LOTS of Zappa, when my wife wasn't there.
