Rode down to Hyde Park today. The Lakefront Trail is closed, so it was all on city streets.

Ernie seemed a bit lonely, so I took his picture:

Alexander Calder's Flamingo (Dearborn and Adams):

Dearborn Station:

Turnaround at Bonjour Cafe (croissant in the bag next to my cafe au lait):

Summer Tree Blowing in the Wind (S. MLK Drive):

Dearborn and Monroe looking north (pretty dead for about 10am on a weekday):

Chicago History Museum (Clark and North):

Wrigley Field on the way home (apologies for the panorama distortion):

Not as far as I recall. My route south was mostly Clark, Wells, Dearborn, State, Wabash and MLK (with suitable west-to-east connectors). On the way back, I mostly rode Cottage Grove, MLK, Dearborn and Clark.

Went out this morning for a ride, on the ANC Halfords Team Replica. There was a bit of mist to start with, but it burned off quickly in the sun.

I went over the Mendips and down into Wells, past the Cathedral - I always stop and look at the clock - then back across the Levels, skirting Glastonbury and going through Godney and Mark, and finally over Bleadon Hill and home.

Very hot day out, I got through a litre of water in 50 odd miles, and I'm now recovering in the garden with a pint (or two) of Thatcher's.

I was out in the country today, too, but haven't edited all my pics yet. But here's a nice shot taken of my "bike du jour" at the UW Bothell conservatory about a mile from home:

I'm just getting back into cycling after a long time away. My bike is currently awaiting a new fork, but the last ride I took was from my house in Kansas City to Cuento Coffee in Raytown. Not much of a distance, but with all the hills in this town (and the jacked up fork), it was a workout.

Was just supposed to be an easy ride up the North Shore this morning, and it was, save for about two seconds of sheer terror. Turning left off Sheridan Road onto Deerpath in Lake Forest, the rear end slid out as if I'd hit a patch of ice. My stem let go of the steerer tube and slammed to the lock nut. I was somehow able to come to a stop without crashing. I think when the stem slammed, the world championship band gave me just enough purchase on the locknut to avoid catastrophe. I wasn't immediately sure how I was going to get back home. I wasn't carrying my 7mm allen key, so I couldn't tighten it up right there. Our car is in the shop getting hail damage repaired, so Ellen couldn't come and fetch me. I didn't have a mask with me so couldn't hop on the train. I yanked up on the handlebars which seemed to wedge the stem in the steerer tube so I could very gingerly ride into downtown Lake Forest. Fortunately, there was an open BP service station and the mechanic let me use his 7mm socket to tighten it up. I practiced my light touch on the bars on the ride home.

When I got home I pulled the stem thinking it had perhaps cracked as these old stems with conical expander nuts sometimes do. That was fine though. I couldn't feel or see any distortion in the steerer tube, so it seems likely it just worked loose over time. I really need to make a pre-ride checklist.

Before the excitement:

Hunting for water around Lake Forest College (found none):

Scary stuff!

Thanks for the heads up, I've got a stem with that style expander nut on a regular rider but haven't really thought to check it that often. I'll try to be more diligent!

Over the I90 to Bellevue

Mountain said hello

Goodwill just reopened. Insane. Three loops of cars through the lot waiting

All the way across the front of the building, then a block up Corwin St, then a block up Dearborn, then up Rainier Ave. It was insane. Must have been 200 cars waiting

Choo choo and stadium

I was number 606 today
