Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? SS cyclocross bike with disc brakes?

I really like the looks of the All City Nature Boy 853--and a few others, too.

But I'd like to know what other single-speed cyclocross bikes are out there. I'm interested in frames that can handle 28~36 cm tires. I don't care about mounting bosses for racks or other things, aside from a couple of water bottle cages. Geometry can be mild to . . . a little wilder. I will be riding on the street and some light trails, nothing too technical; no racing. Budget is <US$2000. I owned a Surly Cross Check for years until I broke the frame. I want something lighter than that.

How? I've literally beat the crap out of my CC, even got rearended by a car once. The frame is still in one piece and straight. (and heavy)

Mine was an original "bean green" model that I abused for years. I bought it in 2000 (I think, maybe it was early 2001; I was definitely riding it on a sad sunny Tuesday morning on 9/11, really enjoying my ride, oblivious to news of the attacks). I converted it to fixed in 2002 and it failed in 2014. The drive-side chainstay cracked/parted from the dropout. I rode it for a few days after it broke and wondered why the "bottom bracket was messed up". The friendly mechanic at my LBS pointed out the real problem.

BTW, my Cross Check frame was Reynolds 631. I've read online rumors about Surly moving away from 631 because of frame failure problems. Big pinch of salt required, but who knows?

Embarrassing stem, saggy B17, etc., from Feb 2002:

Might get some flak, but State Thunderbird.
Has cable stops if you want to put on some gears, optional derailleur hanger. Eccentric bottom bracket.
Room for up to 42 tires.
Heavy though.
~$1000

631 is a solid material. Good quality steel from a well known company. My guess is they moved away from it because it is cheaper to just use more generic 4130 chromo and probably a touch easier to weld maybe?

Nature Boy 853 would be my choice and was my choice till they ran out of last years model in my size and I want with a Cinelli Mash Work which is similar to a bike I wanted to build a few years ago and didn't have the cash.

For a budget of $2k you can find any disk CX frame with a PF30/BB30 bottom bracket and use a BEER components eccentric BB.

Huh, this is in your budget, assuming you can ride a 54CM frame and don't mind purple. Jenson also has the 2016 model on closeout for pretty close to your budget.

Unfortunately, I need something closer to 57 cm. Thanks, anyway.
