A pair of Tioga City Slickers. Once I removed all of the decals, tore it down, reassembled and tuned the bike, I found it surprisingly easy, smooth and comfortable to ride.

Are there any websites with complete Huffy bike catalogs from the early seventies?

I had a single speed coaster brake road bike style new Huffy in 1971, great tough simple bike. This thread peaked my interest to try and figure out what it was. Looking around I see a Raleigh connection, didn't know about that.

Huffy Thunder Ridge

These photos are several months old but they show my Thunder Ridge on the road after my modest upgrades. It's a little crude as to be expected but very pleasant to ride, a nice neighborhood knockabout runabout. I won't be tackling any real off-road trails on this thing, but there are specialized (pun) bikes out there for that.

Upgrades:
1) Sunlite alloy brake calipers and levers w/cables
2) Sunlite 3x chainring
3) Sunlite bottom bracket (all new parts except cups used)
4) SunRace friction thumb shifters w/cables
5) unidentified used replacement seatpost
6) generic foam grips

cheers

Billy S.

I got a Huffy 10 speed for my birthday as a teen in the late 70s. I don't recall hating it but nor did I love it enough to ride it much, it may explain a 20 year hiatus from riding bikes. I don't recall the model I just remember it was a 10 speed road bike, it was earth tones and a bit garish.

I have a little soft spot for Huffy bikes after learning to ride on a "Cheater Slick" banana bike as a kid in the 70's. I wonder if they still make those fat square-profiled rear tires for those types of bikes?

Some have said that the my Huffy thread is the best thread in the history of the forum, but let's not get too carried away. I'm a humble soul, after all. Its probably the 2nd best, and this collection of MULTIPLE Huffys would have to be the best.

Really wish for Johnny Mullet to return, but in his honor, here is the 'Colnago Killer (almost)' -

I know this is an old post, but I just have to comment on it, since there are no doubt many others who feel the same, but either feel ashamed to admit it or feel like they can't or shouldn't. Take that soft spot. Use it. Don't be ashamed, now is your moment.

Work in progress. There is a split in the dropout that needs to be TIG welded. Replaced the stem, bars, shifters, and seat.

My other one. It had cruiser bars and a huge seat when I got it. I added a road seat and put drop bars back on it. I also replaced the stem. It did not come with the original brakes or rear derailleur either. The 6 speed freewheel is not original as well.

I'm curious about that split in the dropout. Any pictures of the dropout or a closeup? I've been going over several different paths in my mind should I ever need to repair one. Out of all the things on the Huffy frame I'd love to nitpick, the chintzy dropout connections are probably at the top of that list.

That bike will be fine without repair, and you've already got a premium longer stem to fit the bmx-diameter steer tube.
I recommend that a wider bar be used with the long stem, just my experience.

Silver Steve, how timely!

I JUST received my new 53mm wide carbon rims that will be going on the pictured Huffy.

I already paid the price of the new bike ($179 on sale from Walmart) on the fork that is shown installed on the bike, so adding tubeless-compatible, i45mm carbon rims and new cassette hubset (is currently still 7s freewheel on all-steel hubs) seems like the next logical step.
Wishing I had some King hubs laying around for the build (I will be using XT hubs).

I don’t think the frame had any heat treating to preserve.

So… I don’t think TIG is necessary, I bet a small tip on an Oxy-Acetylene would work the same to melt the crack together. Or let some brass be pulled in, and hide the repair.

"Burner" abandoned to its fate

All dressed up and ready to go

Still structurally sound after 50 years . Ultimate "patina" bike
