Look at the sticker near the top of the seat tube. Looks like the "Duralon" sticker that was on my old Batavus. That is evidently some kind of finish they used to protect the paint and that company is the only one I know of that used it. The Duralon stuff actually did seem resistant to chips and scratches.

Surely the bike didn't come with that cast stem, or what look like alloy rims(?). What's she weigh?

Early 60s Paragon - the frame was repainted with hand lettering and striping when I got it. I assembled it with period correct components.
The frame was built by Lars Zebroski in Northern California. He was a member of the 1960 US Olympic Team at the Rome Olympics. After the games he stayed on to race in Italy as an amateur for a while.
When he returned to the US he started building frames. He later partnered up with Hugh Enox another early California builder and they produced as many a 300 frames in the early 60s.
The bike rides and handles really well. The Reynolds 531 "pencil stays" and narrow fork blades smooth out the bumps while the frame is still latterly stiff for climbing.

I stopped by Peter Johnson's shop the other day. We swapped stories about the legend of Lars Zebroski and other cycling tales.
Peter has 2 early 60's Paragon frames. I borrowed one of them to photograph the original decals. Supposedly it's a frame that Lars Zebroski built for his wife BITD... Lars and his wife used to ride a fixed gear tandem around the SF Bay Area hills!
I'll post some better close ups of my Paragon plus the other frame later.
Michael Hiltner who now goes by the name of "Victor Vincente of America" was another member of the US Cycling Team at the 1960 Rome Olympics. This is a photo of him from 1965 that I found on the web. He's standing beside his Paragon framed bike.

I'll throw this out there even though it's not that special. It's a mid 80s Orbea Cabestany. I've done a lot of researching but there's not a lot out there at english speaking sites. All Orbea's home office in Spain could say is that they were not importing to the U.S. until much later and that they had no real production records from back then. It may not be rare worldwide but I'm betting not too many made it or still exist in the U.S.

Small correction, it's Victor Vincente of America. I met him years ago while riding in the San Fernando Valley. This dude rolls up next to me on a strange homemade bike, unpainted frame, 20" wheels. Told me he made it. We had a nice chat, told me he lived in Topanga Canyon. Used to see him around from time to time.

I didn't know it when I bought it, but it's a Giorgetto Giugaro design. Somehow, quite often when I find something really striking, he turns out to be the designer. This is especially true with cars. I've owned a few Alfa Romeos he designed, and when I finally win the lottery I'm going to get me one of these, my favorite car design ever:

As usual I will gladly play, custom builds including his signature custom racks, 2 of around 400.
1974 Jim Merz JM027, his custom build for himself, not original, modified and sold by him sometime before 1982 when he went to work for Specialized.
Picture 034 copy.JPG
And 1978 TW189 almost completely original including Eclipse panniers acquired after this pic.

Does a full-custom Mercian Vincitore road fixed-gear designed for long distance rides over mixed road surfaces count?

All sorts of wear and tear and homebrew mods, including a replacement hollow axle for the old Surly New Track hub to allow using the Atom skewer, auxiliary nose rivet on the B17 where the leather began tearing, all drenched in a coating of memories and miles and experiences.

Nice!
And if I may be so bold: a set of cream-colored Bluemels Club Specials would really make that frame pop.

As a matter of fact, I was thinking that when the time comes to replace the SKS P35s with something a little wider to accomodate 32mm tires, I would use SKS P45 Longboards in cream - and if the color doesn't quite match, I can paint the fenders to match the head tube and seat tube panel.
