Shimano sora b screw? Pulley not far enogh away from casette

Hi Guys!

Just bought a used Giant for my fiance with a Shimano Sora on it.

I have just corrected the gears, gut one Thing really annoys me. The upper pulleyis so close to the casette, that is actually seems like it hits it.

Please see the pictures.
The b screw does nothing what so ever. I have tried turning it in and out. Nothing at all happens
.
I have tried a longer screw instead, but it just slips of when i screw it far enough.

What is wrong, and what Can i do?

Thanks in avance!

Kind regards
Casper Wolff

Which model Sora?
What size cassette/speeds?
You may be using a larger cog than it can handle.
You do have the chain installed?

Is the chain perhaps too long? Otherwise, perhaps a hanger extender might help.

Whew, lots of photos. But, what you're missing is a direct side photo of the bike.

Perhaps upload 3 side photos showing chainrings back to the cassette/derailleur. With the bicycle RIGHT SIDE UP.

Big/Big Rings.
Small/Small Rings
Small Front, Big Rear
.
You really don't need a lot of clearance between the sprocket and your derailleur. Just enough that you're aren't riding tooth to tooth, so I think you're mighty close to being OK.

What is your overall gearing? Front large (middle?) and small sprockets? Rear large sprocket (28T?)

Your derailleur should be able to handle about a 28T cassette without the Goat Link/Road Link above.

Ok, here are the actual Sora RD 3300 specs:

SS (double front, short cage)
Total Capacity: 29T
Largest Rear: 27T
Smallest Rear: 11T
Front Difference: 14T

GS (triple front, long cage)
Total Capacity: 37T
Largest Rear: 27T
Smallest Rear: 11T
Front Difference: 22T

Ok, so Shimano lists rear max at 27T, but you should be able to fudge it to 28T.

Anyway, more direct side photos will show us how your chain is cut, and if it is an issue with just certain gear combinations.

If you think you're really close, you could try a longer screw.

Should the circled protrusion be behind the hanger ear and resting against a stop?

I've found that dropout alignment bolts have the same threads as do my B-bolts on my derialleurs. One of those might solve the problem if indeed the OP simply needs a bit longer B-bolt.

Good luck and cheers

No, the indicated stop limits the der body's swing back when the chain needs take up. That nub contacts the chromed B screw plate's tab.

This is so common a problem that some bike manufactures offered a longer der hanger as a solution (like Trek did a bunch of years ago). The Shimano ders of this one's era were fairly limited in cog/ring size spec. Even keeping within the 27T spec we've seen problematic set ups with "pulley Knock" (the noise the pulley makes when the big cog's shift gates pass by the pulley and causes a "bump" in the pulley's contact with the cog's teeth tops. In worst case the chain will acy as a locking device and become "trapped" on the large cog when trying to shift. Sometimes just reversing the B screw (so the head hits the hanger's rotational tab) will rotate the der back far enough to establish clearance. Sometimes a longer screw (and often bent to track the hanger tab's location better). Sometimes the B spring isn't strong enough with these attempts (to increase spring tension) and a replacement der of cassette with smaller large cogs is the only solution. Andy
