Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't recall ever changing a diaper other than perhaps as an assistant.

I've never done it, even as an assistant.

Both.

I don't eat a lot of bad food. Most days I'm vegan and don't have desserts. But sometimes I break down and have cheese or sweets.

I do eat some semi-sweetened cereals and put chocolate chips in my oatmeal. I eat too many chips.

I experienced a ride-ending gluteus maximus cramp yesterday.

Omg.

Didn't even know that was possible.

Did you walk home?

My calf was feeling like it was about to cramp today.

Turns out that if you do nothing for two months, other than sit in front of the computer or play the trumpet, you don't pick up where you left off in cycling. Weight gain and muscle loss take their toll on the hill climbing.

Just an FYI.

I pedaled 1 legged home.

Even today, it felt like I'd been kicked. It was my good hip, too.

I remember being off a few months after an accident. It was hard to break 100w on the first couple trainer rides.

So it's a massive cramp in your butt cheek? Do you normally have a problem with cramps? Or was this completely out of the blue?

Completely out of the blue, after 3 days off.

My first thought, "good grief, a new pain?"

We have no choice. Live in a valley, you ride your bike up mountains or else around in circles on the valley floor

I pulled an old purse out of my closet today because Mr H wanted me to sneak his movie snacks into the theater.

I look inside the purse and find a Williams Sonoma gift card.

??? I don’t remember having a Williams Sonoma gift card. I wonder if maybe it’s empty. If not I’m buying something with it.

So we go to lunch (Thai Chicken Salad) and have some time before the movie. We swing into Williams Sonoma and I’m looking around.

Mr H takes the card to the cashier to find out how much I’ve got.

$303 and change. WTF? How the heck did I get that.

Now it’s a big decision and I’m paralyzed.

Then: movie. (Black Panther)

So now: what do I get from Williams Sonoma?

I legit like to cook and am well-equipped.

I am thinking $300 calls for a small appliance.

Fancy juicer? I eat a lot of fruit, it never hurts to up the veg intake. But really I’m better off eating food than juice.

Could I get a decent espresso machine for $300 or would it be too low-end? Also: I am pretty happy with black drip coffee. Simple, zero calories, time efficient.

Maybe a new food processor? Mine is maybe 20 years old and a little undersized. But I make do with it.

I have a Kitchen Aid mixer which is also a little undersized when I make certain bread doughs. But I rarely do that. And I can easily make No Knead bread if I want. Attachments perhaps? But I already have most of em- pasta rollers/cutters, ice cream bowl, meat grinder, citrus juicer.

I can’t think of what to get. I have good cookware. Have a pressure cooker, rice cooker, crock pot, immersion blender, spiralizer, panini press, mini pie maker, two bread machines.

???

Wow, @Machka, that's incredibly stressful. Just went through a very similar situation with both my mom and a lifelong friend in December. All of January and February were a blur.

Hang in there and look after yourself too. Stay in touch with local friends, family, any kind of support you have available. You'll need it as well.

Moot at this point, but no - too low-end for an espresso machine, unfortunately. If they carry Technivorm, you could get one of the better drip coffee makers out there, though.

They do carry Technivorm and I tried a Mokkamaster (spelling?) out once. Thought it was a PIA to use and returned it.
