Bikes: My mountain bike after 22 years is retired, and I am now using a touring bike, and I still have my folding bike.

Yes, everyday, I ride to the gym and back, but it is only 6 km round trip. On Saturday and Sunday, I rode 76 km. This is of course on an island that is 23 x 34 km big. I did lose some gears on Saturday, so I played with the shifter and the released the cable from the rear derailleur. It seemed to fix itself. The shifter is old, but the derailleur is new. The bike is 20 years old. It does have its quirks, not to mention getting parts that fit exactly is a problem.

Sorry about your Mom; been there. But getting out on two wheels will help clear the mind and the soul.

What a blessing when your parents are also viewed as "friends". Good luck, God bless.

Lazy bone

I almost got into my car to go to the big box store. Instead I hopped on my cargo bike, a juiced u 350 , coasted down the hill 300 vertical feet and did my chore. I had my thick puffy on for a sunny 45 deg F day. I love the electric motor for how it flattens the hill going back up.

Quick

I did not have much time left in between my school bus routes after working on two of my bikes. I got in a quick 6 miles on the steel frame Ochsner that I have sort of hybridized. All gears are now operating. I sure do like riding that bike. I also did some readjusting of the bike rack I have mounted on my Schwinn Supersport DBX. The rack mount was interfering with the shift cable and that was causing a mis-alignment with the jockey pulleys and the cogs. That is my commute, store, library, etc. bike. I have new Conti Contact 37s to mount on that bike.

Yesterday - took the afternoon off work in order to take my stoker for a post-op checkup on her bunion repair. All good. Come spring, she will be my powerful TurboStoker again.
Then, later afternoon got out for a seven mile ride in approx. freezing weather. But dry.
Too danged cold to ride to work today. Supposed to get freezing rain, snow, etc overnight and Thursday. So, able to ride a bit 3 of the last 4 days until today and now looking at some Winter. Not a fan of Winter.......

Good ride today

Managed to get a good 26Kms in today around town on the cycle paths. A bit windy which made me work harder. Trying to build up to 50Kms in a day.

25 miles on the road bike late Thursday afternoon. Started out in the 60s but dropped to the low 50s after dark and my toes got numb. At first I thought it was because I forgot my shoe covers, but it wasn't that cold out. Then I realized my socks were too thick for my clipless shoes -- warmer, sure, but my shoes are summer weight for thin socks and thicker socks cut off my circulation. I should have remembered that from last winter.

Then I tried aluminum foil between the socks and shoes. It worked but was uncomfortable. So I got some toe covers, but they're just oh-kay.

Okay, ordering some full length shoe and ankle covers.

25 miles Friday afternoon. New chain and freewheel don't seem to be getting along with the rear derailleur. Beautiful weather though.

42 mile ride with the missus, which included 3 hill repeats on the local 1-mile/6%grade segment, and then ~2 miles of dirt...which, given Thursday's snowstorm, wasn't really "dirt" at all but rather tons of thick slushy ice, lots of standing pools of water, and some mud. Not fun. But easier than we expected.

@canklecat, Sorry to hear about your mom. She was lucky to have you with her through this.

Both of my parents are still with us, thankfully, although both are very aware that they're on the front lines now. My dad is still quite active but my mom has lost most of her strength and sits .. a lot.

Finally got a sub-freezing ride last weekend. The thing that makes it quite tolerable are socks with holes cut in them for my fingers (arm warmers? wrist gaitors? hand socks?) to keep the extremities warm, while opening both ends of the chest zipper on my outer shell. Love the nighttime in the farmlands.

Thursday went the other direction, into town, down to where I get my prescriptions, about seven miles each way. Kind of a breakthrough ride in that this is new ground and a better way to reach the local transit system -- the route I looked at before was crazy-scary at drive time, with people going 70mph on a road with no shoulders, just curbs. This new route's a straight shot the whole way down a four-lane highway with huge breakdown lanes. Rode from dusk into darkness, with heavy weekday rush-hour traffic. Realized that there's no practical amount of lighting I can put on the bike that'll overcome the glare coming from the light boxes people are now using for floodlights on buildings. (The LED revolution giveth, the LED revolution taketh away.) It seems there should be a concept of too bright, since most of it is just blasting into the night sky anyway. I like nights to be dark, but that's just me. Anyway, a good ride, 33F.

First ride today since breaking my shoulder in late July. 17 easy miles with no pain, loved being back in the saddle. Hoping it won't stiffen up overnight, at least not too much.

Yup

I rode today. 19 miles. On a Bike Friday Pakit with the sun racing toward the southeast horizon, taking the warm from a 50 degree day. A rails to trails path called the Chehalis Western Trail, thick and wet with fallen leaves here and dry where the sun shone all day over there.

Today's warm strategy: nitrile gloves under the fat Boss gloves to keep the latter dry inside. neoprene shoe covers. Three layers above and below the waist plus a wind breaker. Pretty close. Retired living treats me well.

33 miles Sunday night, casual group ride. First time in months I've been able to ride four consecutive days without resting, but my legs were dead tonight. Fortunately the pace was conversational and good company helped pass the miles.

First ride below 40F this winter. Fingers and toes couldn't decide whether they're ready for winter -- the digits kept alternating between feeling numb, then okay, then numb again, etc. I had some of those powder chemical warmer packets but they were old and lasted only a little while, but enough to warm up the toes again.

Gonna rest a few days since I have surgery Tuesday. Okay, probably rest a couple of weeks. Maybe the indoor trainer. Or not. Maybe just watch movies. We'll see.
