Well, today I gave a sick puppy a bike, and neither of us felt better. Thanks a bunch, OP!

Buy whatever bikes you want to buy, be a good person and help your fellow earthlings at least once and while. It ain't rocket appliances.

In another thread a poster made the following comment: [edited for brevity]
So my question is this: Who here considers a $10,000 bike to be a lavish luxurious extravagance? It seems kind of normal to me. At least in my geographic area. Sure $3, 4, $5,000 bike are pretty much normal & everywhere as far as I can tell. $10,000 May be a bit on the high side of things, but certainly nothing out of the ordinary.
[defining "fine bicycle" as one costing 5 to 10% of your annual income] Would you trade a fine bike to buy a meal for a street begger? I wouldn't. All things adjusted for income level, I dunno if the poster in the other thread would trade his $40 bike for a meal either.
[/virtue signaling rant.]
What are your thoughts? Would you?

It's interesting how some claim to not care what others do but go on to insult those same people for the behavior they claim not to care about.
Either refrain from insults or don't claim it isn't your business. You can't have it both ways.
We either mind our own business or we open our mouths and make other people's business our own. One or the other.

How could I have missed this gem of a thread?
For a little perspective, I have a sailboat, which, purchased used, cost considerably more than my first house and continues to consume at least 10% of its value per annum in slip fees, maintenance, gear, and sails, all for a few weeks of sailing per year and a little low-key racing. Many of my friends spend multiples of what I do because they can afford it and no one with a cheaper boat calls theirs an extravagance.
For me, morality enters the question when an affluent individual spends a lot more on toys and fun than (s)he gives away. We don't.

This thread was bad enough when it was just puppies, but now you've got to bring horses into it? Not to mention the moral questions raised by getting a horse high.

It was my rest day. Rode up a Forest Service Rd. from camp looking for wildlife. (The area is home to black bears and grizzlies along with mountain lions.) Decided to turn around and head back after about 6 miles. Then I decided to be more patient, so I stopped at a point above the creek paralleling the road, thinking "If I were a bear I might head down there for a cool drink." Stood there for a few minutes looking around and drinking water. Turned to look back up the road just as he ambles out of the brush heading in the direction of the creek. I let out an audible "Yesssss!" That caused him to stop and check me out, giving me time to get out the camera. Zoomed in as much as I could. He was never close enough to pose a threat. Black bears are generally retreating. As long as you don't get between one and her cubs you almost never have anything to worry about. Had he taken one step in my direction I would have simply headed back down the hill. He stood there for a couple of minutes then walked off.

I've spent most of my life boat building boats and sailing. In the yachting world "normal" has a tremendous range from the typical family boat of 20' to 30' up to mega yachts costing hundreds of millions of dollars. https://www.4yacht.com/yachts-for-sale For mega yachts, operating costs includes a captain, cooks, stewards, deck hands and so forth. Don't even bring fuel efficiency into the conversation. For people at that income level, such costs of hundreds of thousands annually are normal for their toys and has nothing to do with spending a fine day with family and friends out on the water. At least the $10,000 bike owner is out cycling.
