It's time to get my 1988 Stumjumper Comp roadworthy again. I had it built up with drops and 3 x 8 gearing but I've decided to rob the wheels for a different build. The wheels currently on the bike can be used with disc brakes and I'll use them on a surly 1 x 1 that I'm building up.

So I'm going 3 x 6 with the Stumpjumper as this will let me use the original wheels (130 mm 6 speed uniglide Deore XT hubs and specialized rims). They're a bit beat up and have some rust issues so I'll deal with that. Plus I plan on putting on a set of continental winter contact tires since the weather is starting to get colder in central Iowa. It has been a great commuter but 3 x 8 was overkill (heck 3 x 6 will be overkill).

This afternoon's wrenching was installing my new Selle Italia saddle on the 1983 Bridgestone Spica, and fine tuning the fit. Still tweaking the fit, and it's better than the original medieval torture device aka saddle the bike left the factory with.

I swapped saddles on my '07 Roubaix (not vintage, I know) from the original Specialized Avatar, which is gel topped with a center cut out. It's been bugging me for awhile, and being a big Brooks fan, decided to give the Cambium C17 a try. I've got 3 B17s and two Pros on my vintage bikes, but wanted something a little more modern and all weather, but, with Brooks quality, fit and comfort. I must have got the placement about right, because on an 11 mile ride later, I kind of forgot it was there. I do scoot around on the saddle a lot when I ride, and was concerned that the cloth cover might be too grippy, but it felt fine. So far so good. There is a 40 mile club ride tomorrow, but with big time winds predicted for SoCal, not sure if I'll ride. I posted this here because some of you vintage riders might want a modernish, "vegan" Brooks alternative.


Thev "rivets" look huge, but seem fine on the ride.

The vintage 700c wheelset I got from @brian3069 arrived, extremely well packed I might add, They are the exact spec that the Allez frame I got from @tricky would have come with, 700c wobler rims and SunTour GPX hubs. I put some Panaracer RibMo's I had laying around on them to see if the 700x28c would fit on the frame. I am still waiting on a 7 speed FW for this bike and then I will give it a ride. The red treads tires on the red frame bike weren't as garish as I feared...

those wheels look right sharp! not too garish at all. imo, what makes it all work is the vintage wheelset. no standout modern graphics or rim profile. tasteful, modest embellishment! hope you post the finished project

No they didn't, the 28s up front were not an issue width wise but were too tall to give any brake clearence so for now they are wearing some 700x23c Vittoria Zarffiro Pro's that fit fine. I have my eye on some Continental Ultra sport II 700x25c with red stripe for when I do the overhaul.

Trying to finish an '80s Bertoni and running into a problem using a Sunrace 7-speed freewheel with the Nuovo Record rear mech. On another bike, this freewheel works so well with a Super Record RD that I wanted to use it again here. Plus, the chromed 7-speeds are the nicest looking freewheels Sunrace offers.

After many struggles, turns out the main issue is using a 9-speed chain. It was making a racket with its pins randomly catching on the bottom of the cage (at the lower pulley) while on the two biggest cogs. An 8-speed chain was quiet.

Weird. I had used narrower chains before with 7-speed freewheels... Hmm. But maybe not with NR derailleurs.?.

Anyhoo ... the Miyata now has the chromed 7-speed fw, and its NR rear derailleur likes it. The Bertoni and its short chainstays gets a 6-speed fw and a fat chain.

This is for the best. I can go back to having 5mm of axle in the Bertoni's drops. Earlier, it was down to 2-3mm on each side. Probably enough, but now, no worries. Less wheel dish should help a bit, too.

Now to find a use for this 9-speed chain. Maybe I'll flog myself...

...if you look at your pulley widths in your NR rear derailleur, I think you'll find that if you compare them to other makers pulleys they're a little wider (along the bushing, not the diameter of the pulley.) I've never tried them with a chain narrower than an 8 speed, but that might be a reason.

Missing spokes, surface rust on rim and "out of whack". Removed front wheel, stripped down, cleaned and repacked hub (Hercules HR PATTERN), hammer and wood block "trued", and cleaned rim inside and out (Dunlop 26 x 1 3/8), replaced spokes (stainless 285mm), replaced nipples. Laced my first wheel ever. Still need to true it up and remount next week at the bike co-op.

A few weeks ago, the rim on my Raleigh broke. Those Pacenti PL23 rims are no good, and apparently, this happens to a lot of people. Today I rebuild the wheel with an H+Son rim. I could have just done a rim transfer, but I took all the spokes out and re-laced the wheel only because I had forgotten to put my trademark on the wheel before: a rubber band around the hub.
