FYI, the serial number indicates a 1984 model. This one is slightly earlier that the one linked to by markwesti. The presence of stem mounted shift levers, brake safety levers and 27" wheels with Schraeder valves is indicative of an entry level model. The photo does not show the drivetrain but it was typically entry level Shimano Z-series with a Tourney crankset. The brakes also appear to be Shimano Z-series.While the main tubes may be double butted CrMo, the forks and stays are hi-tensile steel. Original MSRP was $249.95 US.

It is hard to judge the condition without additional photos, particularly a good drivetrain photo but it's dirty and the front tyre appears rotted. In current condition it might fetch $50. Cleaned, overhauled and ready to ride, it might fetch $125. It's definitely C&V and there is some value but not a lot. The required parts and labour may not justify the investment. Photo assist....

Shogun was a big brand name for touring style drop bar bikes in the 80's. Some models were numbered. Some had names. Numbers were directly proportional to quality. So, a 1000 model was a better quality than a 100 model. In my experience, I've seen more 400's than any other Shogun model. They must have been very popular. I'm a big fan of the old Shoguns. They were very durable well made mass produced bikes that helped Japan corner the entire bike market towards the end of the 80's and early 90's. A clean Shogun 400 in running condition with good tires is worth $100 all day long. Be good. Have fun.

Got this a little while ago, first Japanese bike I have had...It's a Shogun 400 12 speed Chromium Molybdenum. Champion #2 tubing.
No negatives on this bike, think it's an "82. Got for 35, excellent condition, did nothing except replace tires.....rides, shifts and stops great, Avocet saddle is comfortable.
Probably one of the smoothest , quietist road bikes I have had.....solid.....
