OUCH! At least they are injuries that will heal. Hope that happens quickly.

Sorry about your unfortunate meeting with the pavement. I once broke A leg and spent quite a bit of time off one of my legs altogether and my leg atrophied / was really weak. I used to do my favorite loop averaging 19mph. When I started to ride again, the one leg was so weak that I would be lucky to average 13mph. After a few frustrating weeks, I did some specific isolated leg strengthening exercises, and after about a month I was back to riding faster. Anyways, I have seen your posts over the years. Somehow I thought that at some point you were in Mazatlan? Was that someone else? When the time comes around, you can contact me directly and I would be willing to share the regiment I did to get my strength back.

I usually bungee cord the bike up along the side wall but it wasn’t a priority Tuesday night. At least my buddy put it done on the floor on the non drive side.
The really important stuff........How is the bike????

I was very fortunate that another member of our club was not far away and could take both my bike and me back to my van at the start. After he packed up all my bike stuff in the van he took me to the ER. I wasn’t really in the mood to check out my bike Tuesday night!!

My brother came by today and we looked it over. Interestingly the tires on both wheels were completely flatted. We’re guessing I must have hit rocks with both wheels??? That sort of makes sense as it felt like I was launched off the road.

There are cosmetic scrapes to the brake levers on both the right and left sides which seems weird. I was only expecting scrapes on the right one which is what made first contact with the ground. The bar tape on the left drop bar was scraped up more than the one on the right side as well which was a surprise as well.

Maybe all those were related to the rider behind me riding over my front wheel when I went down??? The front wheel is out of alignment and hopefully it can be trued with tension adjustment to the spokes. Not a big deal if not.

The rear derailluer has scuff marks on it so I suspect the hanger might need retrueing. I have the adjustment tool so no big deal.

However all the forks, bars and other key components looked to be in good condition. It was about time to do an overhaul on the bike anyway so no real extra work involved from what I can tell.

Overall it was better than I might have expected as long as I don’t find any major damage to the frame.

If you have a replaceable hanger, I would just replace it. Mine was not replaceable and had to be straightened. That worked for a year or two, then it needed it again, then again. Aluminium really doesn't respond well after it is initially deformed.

I have to say, when I first saw that pix of your bibs, it didn't hit me that you were IN those bibs and your injured hip was the reason they looked like that. OMG ...

That’s a great reminder on the hanger and I agree. I think I’m on my third hanger already. Even with a new OEM hanger I have to make a small adjustment to get the 11sp shifting dialed in so it shifts “decently” across all cogs. I’m thinking the frame is not exactly true enough to just install the hanger without adjusting it. Maybe that’s why I got such a good deal on it???? More than you want to know but I have the very first Campy 11 sp Super Record grouppo but it just hasn’t performed great. I can get the shifting perfectly tuned and I might get 500 miles on it before shifting gets sloppy again. I have Shimano and SRAM Red on other bikes and those perform exceptionally well. But it’s all Italian on this bike so I just ride it.

Re the bulge in the shorts, the picture really didn’t capture how large it got. That picture was taken in ER a few hours after the crash. I think my surgeon said I lost at least 5 pints of blood draining from that thing. I knew it was a really hard lick right after I bounced off the asphalt.

Well thank god the bike is in good shape But seriously, very sorry to hear about the accident and I hope the hip replacement and the recovery go well. Frankly, you're in such great shape that I have a hard time imagining that it won't go well. Best wishes.

they guy I bought my Super V from told me, "I'm afraid to ride it anymore.. If I fall, at my age, I'm gonna break a hip!"
"How old are you?"
"Sixty."
I thought, jeebus priest.. I'm 56!

Here's hoping you have a speedy recovery!

Bummer to read about the crash.

Why is it after our worst crashes, our first question is "is my bike ok? My last road crash I cussed about breaking my helmet, and someone pointed out at least I could cuss about it.

Get well soon, and do what the doctors say to heal the hip. We're all getting too old to be a hero and come back too early from something like that.

I am still pedaling along at almost 79 (swim, walk, resistance training, etc.), and administer my own active and inspiring FB Group of 65 - 100+ with our oldest participant at 87yo. My wife and I try to ride the trail every year - but this year she is recovering from back surgery, and we will miss it!
