Hi:

Does anyone know of a dealer and/or manufacturer in the U. S. (preferably in CA) of recumbent trikes w/joystick steering? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

The TriCruiser from American Cruiser has one stick but it is placed to the side, not between the legs like the traditional joy stick.

The only one I know if is the Windcheetah, in the UK. A little pricey, though.

Why do you ask, do you only have use of one hand?

Yes. I've lost the use of my right arm and hand due to cancer. I was an avid cyclist and would like to ride again.

Also remember, it's not too hard to control a trike that has the conventional two-handed steering. I imagine your other hand and arm are a little stronger than normal now, right? You shouldn't have too much trouble keeping it in line. I'd suggest visiting a bike shop that sells recumbent trikes to try one out, to see if you're able to control it.

If you do want to go this route, here's what I'd suggest:

1. Find a trike, or get one modified, to control both front brakes using a single brake lever.

2. Modify the trike so that you have a bar-end shifter AND a grip shifter on one handle... one for the front chainrings and one for the rear derailleur. (Is this possible, BTW?)

3. Remove the handle you can't use to save weight, if you like.

Why don't you contact these folks and explain your problem to them? A guy on my mail route knows somebody there, and got one of their trikes. It's very nice. They are in Santa Rosa.

I think you could easily ride a trike with a two brake lever and perhaps a dual drive rear end which would also have the controls on one side. The set-up could be accomplished on virtually any regular trike which you fancied. I put a cup holder on my trike because it is so easy to ride one handed.

My son also lost an arm and hand to cancer and he can ride my Sun EZ3 USX with no problem. It has USS and works great for him
