"I'd say the social discourse needs a little shaking up around here lest you all die"

has been stated by one of our 50+ members in regards to the 50+ forum, in response to a statement by another 50+ member - "I've checked several times to make sure I hadn't dropped into Road. What's going on here? Just more evidence of the general decline in social discourse?"

True?

Thoughts?

I don't want to die, but may flee, as I have difficulty coping with abrasiveness.

There is always the ignore list if someone's posts bother you. I don't have a problem with a little friendly nudging here and there.

The statement concerning death didn't bother me. Then I reviewed his other posts in the thread and concluded that it does when taken in context.

I don't think this has anything to do with "social discourse". patentcad's goal/need appears to be to attract attention where possible. His chosen approach is to be obnoxious. Look at the moniker: patent cad.

Some folks need attention and since they'll resort to "anti-social" for the shock value. He like others of the kind are more an aberration on this forum than an issue of civility.

As was stated before, he should be welcome here. Since he's been "exposed", he'll likely tire of that approach or leave.

Al

I think that someone who will deliberately insult strangers, has no real friends. Also if you train, work sleep, have a family (ie a real life) you probably don't have time to post an average of 27+ posts a day since Nov 2005. Tim

I know he rubs some of you the wrong way but you shouldn't let that happen. It's an on-line persona. Just give it back, he can take it. He's mostly just trying to get a rise out of people, and he's locked down with a bum knee right now so I'm sure he's in a crappy mood.
Someone will always point out the high post count in a negative way but he runs his business from home and is in front of a computer the whole time. Besides, somebody has to be #1.
Seriously, it's just the internet.

I don't mind a little repartee as long as it doesn't get mean natured. I also admire ones ability to laugh at one-self. Pcad embodies both. Just think of him as a kind hearted, self deprecating class clown.

I know the ladies on this forum dislike the chest pounding and scrapping the 41 brings out but as long as things are kept in check, bring it on. I am old, not dead.

I learned a long time ago that some people suffer from attention-seeking personality disorders. The internet is a good place for them as the audience is much larger and they can annoy more people at once

Sometimes people engage as sport, to stir the pot, etc. Much like Saddam Hussein, if we recognize them for what they are, we are less likely to mistake their intentions and capacity to meaningfully threaten us, keeping us from wasting valuable resources against a threat that dosen't exist.

I've noted members of one ethnic or nationality group, or another, who enjoy a sense of brotherhood by trading barbs with one another. Some folks just like messing with one another. That only means they like you.

If this is a referendum on PCad: I noted that when he has serious questions he wanders over to this forum. I was tempted to drop a "HTFU" into the knee replacement thread but it would have been inappropriate, given that the entire discussion was sober and probably very helpful.

The one thing he doesn't do is go trolling on individuals; stuff rolls off his back. This is good.

And when you post a lot, you're going to gack one every now and then even if you don't mean to.

It reminds me of this in some weird way:

Rollin: [as Jimmy walks in on the town meeting that determines Coach Dale's fate] What can I do for you, Jimmy?
Jimmy Chitwood: I got something to say.
Rollin: All right, say what you've gotta say.
Jimmy Chitwood: [to crowd] I don't know if it'll make any change, but I figured it's time for me to start playing ball.
George: [as crowd is cheering, points to Dale] I told you, once we got rid of him!
Jimmy Chitwood: But, there's just one thing... I play, Coach stays. He goes, I go.
George: [crowd starts murmuring] Uhhh, the coach is dismissed by a vote of 68 to 45...
Opal Fleener: I think we should vote again!
Rollin: All those in favor of the coach staying, say 'Aye'
[majority of crowd says 'Aye']
Rollin: , all opposed...
[a handful say 'nay', tears up George's tally sheet]
Rollin: ...Coach stays!

It is not a cheap shot at all. You have simply taken his statements and read more into them than is there. Even your statement about his moniker is incorrect. He does CAD drawings for patent applications. Maybe his humor is lost here..
