Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike Saddle Recommendations

Hey everyone, I recently bought a used Bianchi EROS and I'm looking to replace the current saddle. Could someone suggest a saddle that was <$50?

Obviously, saddles are personal, but I do have to say that I recently got a new bike with a Specialized Toupe, and it is impressive. First saddle that truly feels good. I had heard people talk about Specialized saddles before, and just figured they were overstating and that every saddle is uncomfortable. For me though, the Toupe ended up being it.

I've moved my Ideale model 80 leather saddle across 4 bikes over a period of 35 years.

You could always dig through your LBS' discard pile- most shops tend to have a crate of some kind with take offs that customers didn't want/need.

The Specialized Riva that came on my Hardrock is OK, But the Brooks B-17 I put on my Domane feels perfect, and they tell me it gets better from here.
But the Brooks is $144, the Riva is probably close to your budget.
The Sella Anitomica gets very good reviews, but it also is around $150.
If you are going to splurge, the device that connects the Bike to your ass, is a good place to start.

I have been through the saddle shuffle the last 6 months and just ordered a Brooks B17. Borrow and beg from your friends to test saddles without buying them. You will go broke trying to find the right saddle. If you are riding <60 mile rides you can pretty much ride anything. If you are doing 1,000+ miles a month...modern seats do not cut it; after 60 miles and riding everyday your ass will hurt, which leads to hot spots on your feet, and the final discomfort of saddle sores...pretty much in that order. For 30+ years I rode a leather 1970's saddle and decided to be a weight weenie in the last few years. Mistake! Going back to the leather saddle. I understand you have a $50 budget...my advice...power through your current saddle for a few months and save up some more money and buy a quality leather saddle. BTW Sella Anatomica is doing any saddle right now for $99, they are dream saddle but don't last as long as Brooks.

Saddles are super personal based on many factors including your anatomy and build, riding style etc.

fwiw I've had great luck with an older version of the Forte pro SLX saddle - have them on both my bikes. I think I paid $29 each. Made by Velo.
Edit - the still in production nashbar R1 appears to be the same saddle branded with Nashbars name. Product: Nashbar R1 Saddle

These new saddles made by a company called Fabric seem pretty cool and have some favorable reviews in the press. On my list to check out if either of my fortes finally wears out.

As others have stated, what is comfortable for one butt may be painful to the next. I have a Fizik and Selle on my two current bikes. Both out of your range new but used ones in good shape are always around on ebay. I also have a Charge Spoon and I think it's on of the best deals you can find for a cheaper saddle
