Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

IMO there's not a bicycle helmet on the planet that's worth over $100.

Giros head ≠ Catlike head. The Catlike is more similar in fit to a Bell.

I really like my Catlike Whisper.

I tried one of those on today at Bicycle Cove. I liked the fit but that price, not so much.

Actually, I plonked a catlike whisper on my head and it seemed OK. It was just a quick test, nothing detailed, and my Giro head seemed OK with it.

I really want one that's super cold in the summer. Alas.

It's light (10 ounces), it's comfortable, it's well ventilated, it's reasonably attractive, it's easy to fit, to put on and to take off, it doesn't interfere with my glasses, and it passes the same tests that helmets costing 8x as much have to pass. It's a $40 helmet that's on sale all over the place. Did I mention it cost me $20? - Well, $21.59 with sales tax.
I'm still rockin a Giro Helios from the early 2000s. Scale says 281 grams. Yeah, I've been riding that long and haven't needed it.

MOD NOTE: The OP asked about new helmets, not whether helmets work. Helmet threads usually turn into the same old arguments over their usefulness, however, all of that discussion is limited to the Helmet Thread. The posts in question have been deleted, however, please feel free to continue that conversation in the appropriate thread.

Those things look like some kind of larva nest. Every time I see one out on the road I imagine little grubs crawling out of the holes.

I Actually sort of like this. For one, it would save me getting my thinning-haired head sunburned in the pattern of my helmet vents (which has happened before), and it'll save me a wasp getting into my helmet and stinging my head (also happened before). The cooling thing is a bit of an issue though.

I am looking for a new helmet after getting back into cycling after about 15 years. What do the expensive helmets give you over cheaper models?

That span is way more than industry and many experts recommend. People can argue all day on how long helmets last and are safe, buy why risk it? Decent helmets are $40.

Lighter weight, better cooling, and better adjustments and comfortable fitting.

I have been eyeing the Specialized Prevail and S3. It seems as there is little difference between the two to warrant the extra cash for the Prevail. What interests me most is the venting for the summertime. We spend most of June into September at or above 100. Does anyone have much experience with either?

Much of the weight advantage is only felt in the wallet. Several inexpensive helmets weigh only 10 ounces or so. As for fit - this varies helmet to helmet and cyclist to cyclist. I do think some of the more costly helmets have better flow-through ventilation, but my cheap Bell Solar is pretty good ventilation-wise.

I just ordered a Giro Air Attack Shield for my wife. She's not looking for a performance gain from the helmet. What attracted her to the Shield is the ability for her to wear her glasses underneath the helmet's visor and not have to deal with prescription sunglasses (she's never found a pair that she likes for cycling). I don't know if Giro thought of the Air Attack Shield having a practical benefit for people who wear glasses but it seems to work for some people.

I have that exact same problem. I'll be looking at the Protone in January (when released) and I'm size 58... No idea if I should go medium or large, and no LBS has Kasks on their floor... Bummer!

Damn right. Also very glad to see they're FINALLY making helmets that aren't shaped like perforated parachutes for a change.
