Thank you for asking. Probably about 95%-98% is me alone, the rest random people in a big event, and a handful of local group rides. I don't really like the regrouping and the pace of "C" rides and haven't enjoyed the A/B group pacelines much either. I prefer the open road, a chance encounter, and trying to reel in that rider in the distance ahead.

I think that one of the reasons I ride solo is probably a lack of confidence. My rides vary between 20 and 45 miles, and the few times I've looked at my average on the Cateye it's been between 11.5 and 13 mph depending on how hilly the ride is and how busy the traffic is.

I read the averages that people talk about on the 50+, which are always impressive, and I also read about the non drop policies in some groups, but I would feel bad about slowing the group down.

At 69 most groups would be much younger than I am.

If you are happy staying solo, then no problem. But in many areas, there are clubs that have "C" rides that are just about the pace that you describe. In my local club, there are plenty of C rides, chiefly populated by people broadly in your age group. 12 MPH averages are typical, and longer rides have rest stops.

These rides are casual, supportive, non-competitive, and social. Whether there is a similar club in your area, I don't know, but people with your abilities and riding ambition definitely ride in groups, if they want.

There are some serious riding clubs around here who like to do hammerfests, but most of the cycling groups I know of here in Fort Worth are much more social and do an easy pace. You'd fit right in, Gerry.

95% solo. The other 5% is with my wife, with whom I usually ride 1-2 days a week. I've yet to find anyone available to ride my schedule or my pace, so I go it alone. There are some decent-sized clubs local to me, but the "fast" groups move at a "let's ride 45 minutes to a coffee shop, shoot the bull for an hour, then ride back" pace.

You'd fit right in our group. Usually, we start with a group of 20-30 and people pair off as their speed allows. At suitable intervals, we regroup as necessary.

It does look like a friendly bunch of riders. I suppose it would be fine, as long as they waited for me to regroup at the drink/meal at the end.

I mostly ride alone. I used to ride with a small group but the area we rode went under in the flood. Even so, we only did the group ride on Saturdays in the early early morning.

Typically I ride alone. This is not usually by choice but my neighbor with whom I have ridden many miles has been putting in a ton of overtime the last 2-3 years making him unavailable. Unfortunate, as we are very compatible riders. I don't mind going solo but with good company I find that I focus less on mileage which makes for a more enjoyable ride.

Being retired from the fire department doesn't stop me from riding with the department's cycling team. The 8-10 charity rides I do each year is with the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Cycling Team. Otherwise, my daily rides are done with a couple of retired HCSO deputies. In the photo, I'm the one toward the middle with the beard and the helmet.
