One is better than the other. I know this with no research and little experience.

I used SPD-SL for a year, and it was ok. I would always get a slight twinge in my knee after a long ride. I tried angling the cleats and everything, but I just couldn't get super comfortable.Nothing major to prevent me from riding, but it was annoying.
About 2 months I got some Speedplay Zeros and they suit me so much better. My knees like the 15 degrees of float, and the double sided entry is great too.
It all comes down to personal preference, and the Zeros suit me perfectly.

I have had both. The SPD-SLs never worked for me. I used for about a month. Sold them on Ebay and have been on Speedplay for almost nine years.

To each its own. Used Speedplay light action for a year, and loved the easy clip-in/out, but hated the massive float. Switched to Look Keo blades for 2 weeks. Loved the pedaling platform, but hated clipping-in process. Switched to Speedplay zeros. Locked out the float and now love everything.

Oh, and Speedplay FTW.
Not really sure what's not to like about them....double sided entry, as much or as little float as you want, durable...

I had problems with hot feet at a time that I was using Speedplays. Looking back, I don't think they were the source of my feet issues. At the time, I was changing everything and anything to solve the problem.

Oh yeah? Well without citing ANY research or experience, I say it's the other! So there.

i also prefer speedplay specifically for the platform adapters.

I rode our indoor trainer with SPD's the other day after work, and my knees didn't like them. I've only got around 1500 miles on my speedplay zero's, and they are perfect for me.

However, on long rides of 70+ miles, I need to stop and take my feet clean out of my shoes - one foot gets a hot spot. I have a nice pair of Sidi Genius shoes, so I reckon that's not the issue. The fitter moved my cleats back but still, it feels like somebody is screwing a bolt into the bottom of my foot after a long enough ride.
I'm going to try my wife's SPD-SL pedals for a while and see if there's any difference. Big platform, right? Spare cleats are arriving Sunday, thank you amazon. I expect I'll hate them but in the interest of science, I'm doing it. I've used Look and Time in the past and detested them. So yes, science.

I prefer speedplay because my knees require the float.

SPD on the left and Speedplay on the right. I don't want to offend anyone here.
