Steel trek in the tdf

Has anyone ever ridden a steel trek road bike in the Tour De France and if so what model and year was the bike?

No - Treks involvement with that level of racing started with USPS and OCLV had been the racing standard for 6 or 7 years bythen

No.

Steel Treks were looked down upon by most racers, even though their racing models would have been comparable. They were thought of as a "touring bike company".

I want to say I read in a magazine somewhere that Trek's original involvement with USPS team was almost a PR stunt. No one thought LA would be competitive, let alone be the top finisher.

The 660 was a hell of a race bike and could hold its own against Europe's best bikes, but it was never raced in the TdF as far as I know.

trek

. Lamond was the first person to win the tour on a carbon bike in 1989............a lot of riders were still riding steel for years after that.........Indurain won the tour on a steel Pinarello in 1994 ............Trek was building custom bikes since 1975 so thats 20 years one could have slipped one in there somewhere.......i never heard of anyone riding one but its possible.....they were making high end bikes as good as any one at the time......and most bikes were repainted and rebranded any way........

Trek was a touring bike company. They didn’t even make a racing bike when I bought my Peugeot at my LBS they had Peugeot for racing bikes and Trek for touring.

Trek made its fame in selling touring and sports touring bikes. It also made fine racing bikes even in the early days of the company. That said, in the late 70s racing bikes tended to have eyelets and tended to long reach brakes so that you may be able to mount a little fatter tire and a rack. That is true with my TX 900 which can take (barely) a 32c tire.

This is my 1977 Trek TX 900 which was their top of the line racing bike.
