no clue on the census type info, and I acknowledge that there are too many moving pieces to the big question for my knowledge base, but for sure one part is that interest begets interest. NYC has CRCA which is (probably) the biggest club in the country. There are women's teams, and clinics, and all sorts of connection points. Smaller areas just can't easily create that.
